Best bets for Golden Rose Day.
The spotlight shines on the three-year-olds at Rosehill this Saturday with the running of the Group One Golden Rose. Favourite is the filly Tempted who has a heavy weight of history against her; only colts and geldings have won the race since it became a Group 1 in 2009.
Although just a Listed race, the Heritage Stakes which is also for three-year-olds may have an impact on Coolmore markets with promising types such Beadman, Slipper winner Marhoona, and Akaysha clashing.
It looks a tough day, so we'll go for some each-way value.
The Colin Stephen is Race 3 and the Ciaron Maher-trained Juja Kibo comes out on top, but at around $2.40 in early markets he doesn't look great value.
The better play at $10.00 is the Victorian visitor Taramansour who is edging his way into form after four runs back from a spell.
Two starts back he finished four lengths behind Melbourne Cup aspirant Revelare over 2000m at Caulfield, then appreciated getting out to a proper staying trip a fortnight ago and was beaten just over two lengths by the same horse in the Archer at Flemington.
Although it and the Colin Stephen are both Group Threes, the Archer was a far deeper race with the carrot of a golden ticket to the big one in November. Taramansour never looked a winning hope, but he did work home well and is clearly getting close to where trainer Phillip Stakes wants him.
At the same stage last prep, Stokes brought the son of Dansili to Sydney and has beaten a nose by Tajanis in the 2400m Australia Day Cup - he meets that rival 4.5kgs better on Saturday.
In an average renewal of this Metrop lead-up, double-figure odds looks generous.
We then wait to the last and the in-form mare Monte Supreme.
This five-year-old transferred to the Bjorn Baker yard over the winter after a solid start to her career under Robert and Luke Price.
A first-up win on a heavy Kensington track was a good start, but she went to a new level three weeks back when she easily accounted for a Benchmark 78 field of mares over 1100m at Randwick.
On Saturday she will be asked to carry the same weight against the males, but at just the third run back there should be room for improvement. The prospect of a sizzling pace headed by Bonita Queen, Ticklebelly and Roselyn's Star will suit Monte perfectly, with Collett likely to settle midfield or a little worse in the running line.
There is depth to this race but backing an in-form mare from an in-form stable at odds of around $8.00 is a nice gamble.
