Sydney Specials: Randwick - 23rd August 2025

The first Group 1 of the new season will see the Winx Stakes run on a genuine heavy track at Royal Randwick on Saturday, with the Chris Waller stable well represented with five runners.

Our best bet comes up in the Jersey Day Andrew Wisemantel BM78 Handicap (1200m), with the proven wet tracker Kerguelen.

Now in the Joe Pride yard, the Godolphin gelding comes out of a strong form race after finishing fast to secure second to King Of Roseau in a BM88 Handicap over 1300m at Rosehill Gardens on July 19.

King Of Roseau then went to Flemington in the Group 3 Aurie Star (1200m), where he demolished a solid field in fast time.

Kerguelen has since been kept up to the mark with a 905m tick over trial in the heavy going at Canterbury on August 18.

Tomorrow, from an outside gate, don't be surprised to see Chad Schofield push forward to settle in a midfield position and finish over the top of them on his favoured race surface.

Kerguelen comes here with a fitness edge fifth-up and the $4.80 on offer looks value.

Our next best comes up in Group 3 The Agency Real Estate Premier's Cup (2000m), with the Chris Waller-trained Saltcoats.

The five-year-old gelding jumped out to the 1800m third up when a dominant winner in the heavy (9) conditions at Randwick Kensington.

Saltcoats saves his best for the Randwick track and proven at this trip on his preferred surface tomorrow. On the ten day backup expect to see Saltcoats stalk the good tempo and prove hard to hold out.
