A Closer Look - Tempted’s Golden shot at history

A look at the record of fillies in this weekend’s Sydney feature, the Golden Rose.

A filly being fancied in the Golden Rose calls for one thing; the obligatory story on the dreadful record of the girls in what has risen to become one of Australia's most important races for three-year-olds.

Forty-eight fillies have run in the Golden Rose following its rebranding in 2003 with Forensics the only winner.

The 2007 Golden Slipper winner won the edition run in March 2008 due to Equine Influenza, the year before the 1400-metre Golden Rose attained Group 1 status.

As a Group 1, 28 fillies have run in the Golden Rose with second placings to Speak Fondly (2015), Omei Sword (2016), Champagne Cuddles (2017) and In Secret (2022) the best results.

Tempted will be out to go one better when she steps out in the $1 million event at Rosehill this Saturday.

That daughter of Street Boss ran a new peak when winning the main lead-up, the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m), in which she ran a Timeform rating of 116.

Only five fillies have gone into a Group 1 Golden Rose having run a higher peak figure, none of whom achieved that rating as a three-year-old.

The only filly to run 116 or better at their previous start was Yankee Rose, who ran first up after going 120 to win the ATC Sires' as a two-year-old.

The highest lead-up rating run by a three-year-old filly since 2009 was Omei Sword's 115+, followed by Speak Fondly's 114.

They are among the group of fillies who found just one better, as is In Secret, who went into the Golden Rose after running 113, the equal third-highest lead-up figure.

In Tempted's favour is that she produced her 116 performance against most of her Golden Rose rivals.

Only nine runners will face the starter this weekend and Tempted accounted for six of them in her 1-1/2 length win over Beiwacht in the Run To The Rose on September 13.

The two who didn't come through the Run To The Rose are Chris Waller-trained pair Sixties and Autumn Boy, who ran the quinella in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) on Run To The Rose Day.

The Ming Dynasty is yet to feature in the lead-up form of a Golden Rose winner.

The Run To The Rose has proven by far the best guide with 18 winners of that race having gone to the Golden Rose with 14 having filled a top-three spot, including six who have completed the double.

Ten of the 16 Golden Rose winners at Group 1 level have had their final lead-up run in the Run To The Rose, eight of whom filled a trifecta slot.
