Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for August 14.
Australian thoroughbred TAB meeting are today held at Newcastle, Bendigo, Ipswich and Bunbury.
NEWCASTLE: RACE 8 @ 4:55 PM
MIZELLA (4) went back from the draw and covered ground in the run when a disappointing tenth over 1600m at Randwick in Highway class. Drops back a level for this and two of his three wins have come at this course. Ready to bounce back. UNREAL EXPECTATION (7) chasing the hat-trick today. Jumps a few levels after closing late to score over 1400m at Forbes. Well drawn and Lever sticks. YORIKIRI (10) tough old gelding who drops in weight for this. Chipped away late when fourth over 1500m at Muswellbrook in the heavy (8) going. Each way player. OAKFIELD MAMSELLE (2) races well third up and expecting a better performance after being snagged back from the draw when a poor last over 1600m at Hawkesbury. Look for her late.
SELECTIONS: Mizella to score a well deserved victory.

BENDIGO: RACE 6 @ 3:30 PM
STEAMY MIST (7) resumed with a near miss at Cranbourne, and there was plenty of merit in the effort. She's proven second up and is sure to keep improving for a smart yard. A solid each-way play. JOYNER (4) resumes and has switched from a Sydney stable. She only raced twice last preparation, disappointing, but she showed plenty prior. She's won a jumpout and maps for the run of the race. Jamie Melham is a key jockey booking. ROYAL LASS (5) won as expected at Geelong and can build on that. She's good enough, but an awkward barrier needs managing. FUROSSHI (3) has jumped since a solid return at the track. Has a soft barrier, and he blinkers go on again. She's good enough and also has claims.
SELECTIONS: Steamy Mist each-way.
IPSWICH: RACE 3 @ 2:10 PM
SMART SHAZZA (13) has been knocking on the door of a maiden victory with consecutive runner-up finishes this campaign and strikes a very winnable contest here. Hoop Marshall has been in the irons for both placings and stays on top. Can go one better against this line-up. BLACK ASSASSIN (2) has had a few chances but placed in three of his past four before the spell and is drawn to get all the favours from the inside alley. Worth serious consideration while fresh. CHAMPAGNE TOWER (9) has placed two from two around this circuit and will strip fitter third-up from the break. Top-three candidate. HE IS THE KISS (4) has placed five of nine over this journey and should get across easily from gate two. May trouble the judge. ESTHER MARY (11) is facing the starter for the first time and any market confidence must be respected.
SELECTIONS: Smart Shazza to break the maiden status
BUNBURY: RACE 3 @ 4:27 PM.
SECRET INTENT (4) presents at peak fitness and has threatened her last two. Started at $3.50 at Belmont last time, and this is easier. She deserves to break through, and this is the right race. BELLA VIOLETTA (5) found a 50 and stepping up to a middle distance a stretch last start, but she only missed 1L here prior at this distance range. She peaks now, and Chris Parnham sticks aboard. She has more to give and is a player. REBELNADO (2) has good ability but didn't come up in his two starts last preparation. He's had two runs this campaign, and no surprise if he shows more stepping up to the mile. PRINCE EPAULETTE (1) is third up and has more to give. He raced at Listed and Group level at his first two starts and gets in well with the 2kg claim.
SELECTIONS: Backing Secret Intent.
