Tasbred boost provides added incentive

A bonanza for Tasmanian owners and breeders begins on Friday night, with all maiden races now carrying the Tasbred bonus of $20,000.

Commencing this Friday night in Launceston, all maiden horses bred in Tasmania will be eligible for the bonus, of which $16,000 goes to the owners and $4000 to the breeder. Previously, the bonuses were restricted to selected maiden races.

Also, for this Friday's meeting, if a Tasbred horse wins a race that isn't a maiden, the owners will receive a $5,000 voucher for next year's Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

In the opening race, the 1100m maiden, both The Trine and Gladding will be chasing the bonus, while in the 1400m maiden, Eaglefurther, Rousing Levi and Silver Grange are eligible.

One horse that will be a short-priced favourite to pick up a $5,000 Magic Millions voucher will be the exciting Mazzini in the 1200m class 1.

Mazzini has raced only once but was super impressive, scoring a 7.5-length win at Devonport on 29 June.

The Barry Campbell-trained 3yo was just as impressive, winning a trial at Longford on 21 October.

"He trialled better than I thought really, he went almost the same time as Durazzo and Sanniya, and he looked to be doing it pretty comfortably, he did surprise me a little bit," Campbell said.

"He hasn't missed a beat. We worked him the next morning. Kelvin (Sanderson) rode him and said he felt good, nice and free in his action.

"I was going to kick him off in Hobart next Tuesday, but he's going to go to the 3yo Cup, and he's never been to Mowbray, never been under lights, so I changed my plans at the last minute."

Mazzini has drawn barrier five in a field of six on Friday night. Campbell expects the horse to sit second outside the leader from the draw.

While Sanniya, a winner of two races from two starts, including the Gold Sovereign Stakes, was named 2yo of the year last season, many observers believe Mazzini will be the better 3yo.

The Campbell-trained pair are on target to clash in the $125,000 3yo Cup over 1200m in Launceston on 21 November.

Looking for a winner, I'm keen on Respite in race 3 and Baybougg in the last, both have the in-form Erica Byrne Burke in the saddle.

The first race is at 18:00. Lauryn Bingley will join Colin McNiff with all the action on Tasracing Live.
