After a lifetime with horses, apprentice jockey Kirra-Lee Lane will make her long-awaited debut with two rides at this Sunday's Devonport meeting.

The mature-age apprentice has plenty of experience to call on, having been involved with horses since childhood and ridden in more than 100 trials.

"I grew up riding horses. I started when I was four. I've done heaps of pony club, dressage, show jumping, that kind of thing.

"I got into horse racing because of my grandfather (Rod Mcgarvie) on King Island, he's a trainer over there and was president of the race club for a little while, so I started riding trackwork and it went from there," Lane said.

Lane, 29, has to juggle her aspirations of becoming a jockey with being a mother to a couple of youngsters aged two and three.

"It is very full on, I can include them a little bit on the fitness side of things, they come out on the bike while I'm running."

"I've always wanted to be a jockey, and after I had kids, I thought, I love being a mother, but what is it that I want?  I knew it was this, and I decided that was what I was going to do."

As a teenager, Lane did a little bit of rodeo, just for a bit of fun, but she always continued to ride trackwork.

"From King Island, I moved to Tasmania for college because you can't do years 11 and 12 over there, so I came over here and started riding a bit of work for Kelvin Hamilton and freelance trackwork.

"I've done 102 trials," she said with a laugh,

"I'm not unhappy about that; it's been good to get that experience.

"I'm pretty stoked (about Sunday) every morning I wake up, my partner tells me how many more days I've got to go, so yeah, I'm really excited."

Lane will ease her way into her full-time riding career with two mounts on Sunday.

"I've got one for my master Glenn Stevenson, Harrata and one for Mark Ganderton, Oh She's Trouble."

Lane won on Oh She's Trouble at the Devonport trials a little more than a week ago; she also won that day on Hartman for trainer Barry Campbell.

Lane has been associated with the Stevenson stable for about 2 and a 1/2 years, and the trainer says she couldn't be more proud of her as she prepares for her first day as a jockey.

"For a girl who has been riding horses all her life and to have two kids, this is something she wanted to do a long time ago and to get herself to the fitness level that she has, I think it's amazing," Stevenson said.

"She has so much determination, and as we know, if you ride winners, you can be very successful in this game, and I hope it pays off for her."
