Many of the champs have won the Moir Stakes run at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Black Caviar did it twice. Will the 2025 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Saturday produce another elite one?
2025 MOIR STAKES - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND
The Moir Stakes is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions for open class sprinters at Moonee Valley conducted by the Moonee Valley Racing Club.
The Moir Stakes is run over 1000m. It was first run in 1976 and was won by Scamanda.
The Moir Stakes has always been run at Moonee Valley. It used to be run on Cox Plate day but was brought forward in 2013 to be pre-AFL Grand Final day. Now it is run closer to the start of the season.
It used to be run over 1000m then for seven years until 2014 went to 1200m before returning to 1000m in 2015.
The race is named after a former chairman of the MVRC AJ Moir.
From 1979 the Moir Stakes was a Group 2 but was a Group 1 in 2013.
Buffering ran in five straight Moir Stakes winning three of them and second in another.
Fillies and mares have a great record in the race winning it 11 times in the last 22 years. In fact they ran the trifecta in 2017 and had 4 of the first 5 home in 2018 and same again in 2020.
With both races at WFA at Moonee Valley, Spinning Hill, in 2002, was the last horse to do the Moir Stakes/Manikato Stakes double. The only other is Manikato himself in 1982.
In 2019 Nature Strip showed he was in top form as he ran 4th in the Everest and then won the VRC Sprint Classic. He also won the Challenge and TJ Smith Stakes in the Autumn.
Since the advent of The Everest, a horse has been selected from the Moir, be they winners or placegetters, for the first five runnings of the Randwick race.
Coolangatta won the only two 1000m G1s in Australia in one season as she took out the Lightning in the Autumn.
Imperatriz would break her own track record set three weeks earlier in flying from the back in 2023. She'd go on to clean sweep the MV WFA sprints for the year.
The absolute freak Black Caviar won it twice.
The Moir Stakes was worth $750,000 in 2025.
Notable winners of the Moir Stakes include Imperatriz (2023), Coolangatta (2022), Wild Ruler (2021), Pippie (2020), Nature Strip (2019), She Will Reign (2017), Extreme Choice (2016), Buffering (2012/2014/2015), Samaready (2013), Black Caviar (2010/2011), Apache Cat (2009), Miss Andretti (2007), Spinning Hill (2002), Falvelon (2000), Schillaci (1992), With Me (1990/1991), Placid Ark (1987), Special (1986) and Manikato (1982).
