Wheels up for Ty’s first Tassie trip

Queensland apprentice Ty Wheeler will have his first taste of a Tasmanian winter when he rides in Devonport on Sunday.

The 2kg claiming Ty Wheeler will fly in for seven rides on the eight-event card, ready for a significant drop in temperature from his regular base on the Sunshine Coast.

"He doesn't know a single person down there, and this will be the first time that Ty has been to Tassie," said Wheeler's riding agent, Trent Jackson.

Wheeler has built a following on the social media platform TikTok, and it was the urging of some of his fans, along with a shortage in claiming Tasmanian apprentices, that brought about the opportunity.

"A few people suggested that Ty should come down to Tasmania and provide some trainers that might put him on, and I jumped on the phone and here we are."

Wheeler, 26, has 42 career winners, all in Queensland, where he is indentured to trainer James Moore. He rode at Gatton on Thursday and has four different trainers using his services in Devonport.

"I think he has a couple of good chances on Sunday, mainly Happy Clan in the last, for John Keys looks like the pick of his rides."

On-loan apprentice Christopher Pang was a prime recent example of the current opportunities in Tasmania, and it's expected that Wheeler will be a frequent visitor to Tasmania across the next few months.

"We plan to keep coming back while the racing is on Sunday in Tassie.

"The way it is here in Queensland now, there are so many jockeys and apprentices, so it's difficult for Ty to get bulk rides. It's a great chance for him to develop himself by riding in a new place against different opposition and hopefully take the opportunities with both hands."

Sunday's program has had a time adjustment for the opening race, moving to 12:09 from an original time of noon.
