Memsie Stakes - Treasurethe Moment

What a return from the champion three-year-old filly, destroying a field of seven other individual Group One winners on her seasonal return and announcing herself as one of the best horses in the country.

She's run to a huge new peak of 124 on the Racing & Sports scale, up from a previous peak of 115, which she'd run in both the Kewney Stakes and Vinery Stakes over 1600m and 2000m respectively.

The pace was strong here, set up by Pinstriped who went far too keenly, and sectionally, Treasurethe Moment sat in a beautiful position, bursting through and coming right away.

Mr Brightside was rock solid in second, probably just ever so slightly to close to the speed but still very good. He's run to 116 which is below his previous four first up efforts which read 123-120-118-121.

In terms of Memsie winners, Treasurethe Moment at 124 is in the top handful, and searching the RAS database back to 2000, the great So You Think (128) sits clear from Weekend Hussler and Vega Magic (126) as the best Memsie winners.

In terms of mares, only Atlantic Jewel's 'welcome back darling' off 490 days going 125 knocks off Treasure, who sits alongside an outstanding duo of Miss Finland and Sunline at 124, rating higher than Makybe Diva (121), Snapdancer (120) and King's Rose (120).

Looking at mares throughout recent history, a RAS rating of 124 puts Treasurethe Moment among very good company.

It's the same peak RAS rating held by: Jameka (x3), Arcadia Queen (x2), Lucia Valentina (x1), In Her Time (x1), English (x1), Royal Descent (x1) and Srikandi (x1).

Funnily enough, all of In Her Time, English and Royal Descent's peak rating of 124 came when finishing second, to Santa Ana Lane, Chautauqua and Sacred Falls respectively.

I'll admit, I was colder on her than many and wanted to see her make that next step, which she clearly has. The two times she's seen a strongly run race (Kewney and Memsie) have resulted in new peak ratings which is worth noting.

The question now is, can she go on with it? Horses with a semi-established profile (i.e., not in the first few starts) that hit a peak rating statistically regress next start, especially when you're running to such a high level. Basically, it's much easier to go backwards than forwards from 124, and she did get the right scenario on Saturday to run to her best.

That said, there's every chance she's the best horse in the country by the end of the year having clearly run better than Via Sistina (121) in the Winx Stakes first up. They should clash sooner rather than later and while Via deserves favouritism for her body of work and lofty peak of 132, Treasurethe Moment is looming large.

McNeil & San Domineco Stakes

Across Caulfield and Rosehill, we had two like-for-like contests for the new three-year-olds at Group 3 level with the McNeil Stakes (1200m) won by Tycoon Star and the San Domenico (1100m) by Raging Force.

The Sydney form has just edged the Melbourne form on this occasion but not by much with both races rating well.

Tycoon Star turned the tables on Jimmy Recard from the Vain Stakes to run a clear new peak of 114 on the RAS scale, his previous best 108 when third in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

The speed was good and dominated by those close to it with the trifecta really gapping the rest who were either not good enough or simply not quick enough to keep up.

A rating of 114 is strong for recent editions of the McNeil, matching Growing Empire last year and Jacquinot in 2022. It's ahead of subsequent Group One winners Merchant Navy (112), Veight (109) and Super Seth (107), all of whom continued to improve quickly.

At Rosehill, Raging Force was all the rage off a very fast time figure in a late season two-year-old handicap, off 56 days here compared to the likes of Wodeton (147 days) and Beiwacht (161 days). That residual fitness was certainly helpful in a genuinely run affair.

He'd run a RAS rating of 105 as a two-year-old although the time and splits that day said he'd almost definitely be better than that which has eventuated quickly, running to a new peak of 116 on Saturday.

The San Domenico is often the kick off point for the top liners and the RAS ratings show that with Snitzerland (120) edging Exceedance and Anders (119) in the past 15 years, while Storm Boy went 118 last year.

Raging Force at 116 rates much higher than recent winners Libertad (108) and Sweet Ride (110) and alongside 2018 winner Graff.

No doubt Wodeton was unlucky when blocked for a run along the inside and has come back well. He's got a point to prove and didn't get his chance to on Saturday so the Run To The Rose in two weeks' time looms as D-Day for him.
