On the course– in this instance Newbury in the Hungerford.
More Thunder proved a strong winner for Haggas-Marquand over the 1400m to take the G2 Hungerford Stakes and look forward to creating more thunder. Witness Stand took the second money and Marvelman was the third home.
The Geoffrey Freer was a nice win for Andrew Balding's Furthur who obviously will be going further after defeating Epic Poet and Candleford although there are not that many opportunities to run at this distance or further but he's come through the grades well and should be able to tackle a rise in class without too many problems.
The thunder off the tracks is the planned strike of all British racing on 10th September in protest against the Government's proposed betting tax. There will instead be a big protest demo in London outside the Houses of Parliament. Whether this will have the desired effect or not remains to be seen, as there are only four tracks affected and no major races scheduled at any of them. We are not too sure of the pros and cons of this proposed tax but British Racing is not in the best of health and needs support rather than more fragmentation.
