A big thrill for Eve Johnson-Houghton in the Vintage as Zavateri keeps winning.
A 2yo by Without Parole has been a big boost to Even Johnson-Houghton's confidence as a trainer (and bank balance) as Zavateri remains unbeaten after winning the Vintage. That was his third start and third win as he managed to find another breath and outrun the challenge put down by Morris Dancer 22/1 under Will Buick.
Favourite Dorset didn't fire and the third spot went to Do or Do Not who is proving to be a very reliable option.
The Lennox was a happy result for Hollie Doyle as her mount Witness Stand on 25/1got the win over Lake Forest ridden by husband Tom Marquand with Audience 3/1 third.
There was an upset before the start when the horses were waiting to load as Audience lashed out and caused a cut to fellow favourite Kinross's right foreleg and since it was bleeding the Vets ruled him out. This was a great shame as the old boy was going for his third win in the race. So that was an unhappy result for Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan as well as a lot of punters.
And then the low point of the day came in the Goodwood Cup when the wonderful Trueshan did a rear fetlock and it as not deemed a recoverable injury. He's been a great ambassador for racing right round the world as having been bought for a very modest sum he came out to win over two million pounds. Hollie Doyle who had ridden him in nearly all his rides was desolate after the race and it was a very sad parade ring after the race, which went to the promising Scandinavia, a Justify colt who had a stone less than his stablemate Illinois who took second with Sweet William third.
Thought of the day – is there anyone in racing more debonair in a Panama hat than John Gosden?
Let's hope Wednesday is more about "highs" and we get through without any more
"lows".
The Oaktree is G3 over 1400 for f&m of which there are 14 participating. Ralph Beckett and Ryan Moore combine with Tabiti on 7/2 in what is otherwise quite an open race. Cloud Cover is on 8/1 for Clif Lee and James Tate and then Godolphin's Romantic Style is expected to do well in this and comes in on 9/1. We have a roughie here in Saqqara Sands 16/1 for Beckett-Rossa Ryan.
The Molecomb is G3 for 2yo over 1000m and has a field of 8. Lady Iman has a 2-1-1-1 record to date so comes in on 6/4 for Ger Lyons and Ryan Moore – she's by Starman. Military Code is a Godolphin Wooton Bassett for Appleby-Buick and is on 7/2 and we rather like Argentine Tango who is fast! Tim Easterby and David Allan the responsible adults for this sun of Mattmu.
The Sussex Stakes G1 is one of the highlights of the week and there is a bit of an Aussie interest in this 7 runner race. Field of Gold is of course odds-on at 1/3 for the Gosdens and Will Buick. Rossalion is expected to be the main opposition but don't forget Henri Matisse who is capable of showing up.
The Aussie flavour comes with Docklands owned by OTI racing and winner of the Queen Ann when ridden by Mark Zahra. Tom Marquand takes the ride and after all he's "Aussie Tom". They are on 22/1 and a finish in the first six will help provide some treats for the trip back to Oz. The other is former American galopper Carl Spackler who has been bought by Yulong Investments (Australia) with Australia in mind and is already under the care of Ciaron Maher. If they are on the same flight they should have time to compare notes on their time in the UK.
