Make sure you do and get to Galway for the famous (and infamous) Galway Week.
And see the sun go down on Galway Bay. That was a famous Bing Crosby song and they just ran the race named for him at Del Mar on Saturday.
The Ballybritt course has it all – flat, hurdles and steeplechase races and starting times that are often late in the day to enable the locals to come from work (so they say). The week has an incredible atmosphere but if you want to survive it's not a bad idea to take a break in the middle of the week – rain is forecast for Thursday so that could be a sign.
Monday's highlight is the Connacht Hotel Handicap over 3400m for amateur riders with a field of 20. They are watering the jumps course as they have had a spell of warm dry weather (not sure about the definition of "spell" in Ireland) with the flat course "yielding". Too Bossy For Us is favourite here on 7/2 for Mullins père et fils but has to carry a lot of weight and only one horse has won this race carrying 11 stone. Comfort Zone is with Joseph O'Brien and is on 13/2 with Derek O'Connor on board. We are going for another Mullins runner Plantier with Jody Townend riding and they are value on 20/1.
Royal Hollow could also figure here on 14/1 for Slattery- A P Ryan.
On Tuesday the feature is the Mile Handicap with 14 runners and Dermot Weld for may seasons has been the King of Ballybrit so we like to keep his horses safe and in this race we like his Coeur d"Or 17/2 with Chris Hayes on board. Evening Blossom is on 10/1 for Joseph O'Brien and McDonouth and Mississippi River 5/1 for Aidan with Jack Cleary riding.
