Royal Ascot 2025 - Day 3 and Day 4

Every day brings up a super-race and Thursday was no exception.

That came in the Gold Cup where Trawlerman ran an incredible race leading from the front and not causing jockey William Buick any problems.  He was given a bit more rein before entering the turn into the straight and that may have upset some of the trailers and once round the bend he was already so well established that nobody could get near him.  He established a new record for the race and while his second last year was workman-like his win yesterday was masterly.  The Gosdens are having a golden spell as they've saddled the winner of the feature each day so far plus several other good finishes.

It was William Buick's first Gold Cup and he rode an exemplary race (although he said the horse new exactly what to do) leading the field for the whole 3000 metres, which is not an easy thing to do but between the horse and jockey their timing was perfect.

Illinois isn't quite the new Kyprios but was a gallant second just the same and another Godolphin horse Dubai Future showed that he has a future not just in Dubai but anywhere.

Earlier Charles Darwin endorsed Aidan O'Brien's record with 2yos as he won the Norfolk Stakes by 2 ¼ lengths from Godolphin's Wise Approach 10/1 and J Mac steered Sandal's Song 9/1 into third place.

The Ribblesdale saw another O'Brien-Moore winner with Garden of Eden who zoomed to the front and defeated the Gosdens Understudy under Robert Havlin on 40/1!  What's with the punters letting a Gosden runner go at 40/1?  The favourite Catalina Delcarpio was third.

Ryan Moore clocked up his 90th Ascot winner and entered the list of ten most successful flat jockeys of all time.

Friday's card starts with the Albany G3 for 2yo fillies over 1200m with 17 starters including runners from the stables of Aidan, Joseph and Donnacha O'Brien who are no doubt intending to keep the race in the family,  Aidan has Signora, a Frankel filly who will be ridden by Ryan Moore and is on 2/1.  Hugo Palmer's Fitzella has a win at Haydock and a second at Ascot in her CV so far and will be ridden by Oisin Murphy and they are on 5/1.  She's a daughter of Too Darn Hot.

On 6/1 Venetian Sun runs for Karl Burke and W Lee with the filly winning well on debut and we like Balantina, with Donnacha O'Brien who has Tom Marquand riding the Ten Sovereigns filly and they are on 12/1.

The Commonwealth Cup G1 is over 1200m for 3yos but no geldings!!!!  Why??? The gene pool is surely strong enough that you don't have to protect the future stud careers of these 3yos at this stage of their careers.

So we are pleased to announce that we are running in this – by "we" we mean Whistlejacket, the horse not our nom-de-guerre.  Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore will be hoping he can add to their juvenile tally and he's on 10/1, which is pretty generous.  Favourite is the Appleby-Buick Shadow of Light on 15/8 after running third in the Guineas after being hampered and is now coming back in trip which should suit.

Berkshire Whsiper is on 20/1 for Andrew Balding and Kevin Shoemark and Sky Majesty 16/1 for Haggas-Marquand.

The Coronation Stakes is G1 for 3yo fillies over 1600m with 11 runners and the unbeaten Juddmonte filly Falakeyah runs here for Burke-Crowley leading the quote on 9/4 together with French raider Zarigana who won the French Guineas by virtue of a protest over She's Perfect.

Aidan O'Brien's January is improving and obviously connections are hoping her prep race will have done the trick and she is on 7/1 together with Kon Tiki, Jane Chapple-Hyam's 3 from 3 runner who will be under William Buick for this.
