Panic Attack became the first horse to complete the Paddy Power Gold Cup and the Coral Gold Cup since Celestial Gold in 2004, handing conditional Tristan Durrell the biggest day of his career to date.
Trained by Dan Skelton, the nine-year-old mare was relatively unexposed over fences before the start of the new season, generally remaining against her own sex for a win and a placing in mares' handicap chases. She commenced the new campaign with an emphatic win in the Paddy Power Gold Cup with Harry Skelton aboard, but with stable jockey required at Newcastle for The New Lion, conditional jockey Tristan Durrell was given the call-up for the Coral Gold Cup.
A twenty-four runner field went to post, with Three Card Brag and Myretown setting the early pace during the marathon contest. With the latter falling at the ninth fence, it was left to the Gordon Elliott-trained Three Card Brag to forge the path and he remained in control until Panic Attack came alongside at the fourth-last jump.
The daughter of Canford Cliffs continued to travel well all the way to the line, defeating Three Card Brag by six-and-a-half lengths, who had rallied to hold off the challenge of Joe Tizzard's The Changing Man.
Speaking to ITV Racing, Durrell said: "I cannot believe it.
"I felt a bit of pressure after the disappointment up at Newcastle with The New Lion, I just wanted to try and make it a bit of a better day for everyone – I can't believe we've won it.
"It's an unbelievable performance from the mare and brave of Dan to put her in this. We thought she'd go well but it's a massive ask to win the Paddy Power and then come here and do this. It's an amazing team and I'm very proud to be a part of it. For them to put their trust in me, I can't thank them enough."
