The team assess the live action on ITV, featuring day two of Cheltenham’s November Meeting and Wetherby
Paddy Power Arkle Challenge Trophy Trial Novices' Chase (Grade 2) – Cheltenham – 13:45
On a day where conditions could prove attritional, it could pay to side with proven quantities on deep ground, and French raider Stencil holds such a profile in this contest. While July Flower and Be Aware head the market at short odds, the going may not play to the latter's strengths, and this contest has more depth than the top two suggest.
The JP McManus-owned gelding is a lightly raced and very much an unexposed chaser in the making. He caught the eye here last season when finishing second to East India Dock before his free-going nature cost him on handicap debut in the Fred Winter. Connections have long felt fences would unlock his potential, and two wins at Compiegne on heavy suggest this to be more than winnable.
Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase (Class 1) – Cheltenham – 14:20
This year's renewal looks typically competitive, but the race may revolve around the progressive Coming Up Easy, who continues to go from strength to strength. Henry de Bromhead has his yard in excellent early-season form (24.71% strike rate in October), and this improving seven-year-old could well be the one still ahead of his mark. An impressive winner of a Listed handicap at Killarney in August - completing a hat-trick in the process - he travelled strongly throughout on that occasion and put the race to bed with authority. That performance suggested he's ready for a deeper test, and the return to this sort of high-profile handicap looks a natural next step.
Conditions should hold no fears, and his upward trajectory marks him out as a serious contender in a field where several rivals have questions to answer. He looks primed to make another significant impact.
From The Horses Mouth Podcast Handicap Hurdle (Class 2) – Cheltenham – 14:55
This could be an ideal opportunity for Supremely West, who made a highly encouraging start to life with Dan Skelton when finishing third over this course and distance last month on his seasonal return and first run since a wind operation. He travelled noticeably well before staying on strongly up the hill, finishing over two lengths ahead of the reopposing Long Draw, and there's every chance he can take a significant step forward for that outing.
The handicapper certainly seemed to spot the promise in that effort, nudging him up 1lb despite the five-and-a-half-length defeat, and his record in testing conditions – two wins and three runner-up efforts from five outings on officially heavy ground - suggests he'll relish any ease underfoot. With improvement very much on the cards, he looks a major player in a race that shouldn't be as deep as some Pertemps qualifiers.
Kikijo is still lightly raced and his recent fourth at Aintree reads well, so he could emerge as the main danger if finding further progress, but Supremely West sets a solid standard and is fancied to go close.
Boyle Sports Best Odds Guaranteed 'Introductory' Hurdle (Class 2) – Wetherby – 15:10
While the market is understandably headed by Fresh Perspective, who was impressive when bolting up by eight lengths at Fontwell on hurdles debut despite doing plenty wrong in the process, potentially heavy going is sufficient reasoning to perhaps identify a selection against the favourite at the current prices.
Cueros is a danger to all, especially with the eye-catching booking of Patrick Mullins. He made a winning start for Harry Derham at Newcastle and shaped as though there's plenty more to come, even if that form may not be the strongest. His rider's presence alone demands respect in a race like this, boasting one win from one attempt at the Yorkshire track.
Paddy Power Intermediate Handicap Hurdle (Class 3) – Cheltenham – 15:30
A deep and competitive handicap, but it may pay to chance on De Temps En Temps, who could be lurking on a very workable opening mark. He produced a remarkable performance to win here last time, recovering from a serious blunder at a crucial stage before charging up the hill in the style of a horse in need of a longer trip. This step up in distance should suit him perfectly, and the handicapper may well have underestimated him.
Boyle Sports Home Of The Early Payout Handicap Chase (Class 3) – Wetherby – 15:43
Just seven go to post, but this small field could still produce a strongly-run race with several potential pace angles. Primoz is one of these, and Lucinda Russell has held this gelding in high regard for some time. The seven-year-old won at this meeting last year, and Derek Fox's £10.38 return to a £1 stake at Wetherby is noteworthy.
Things haven't quite gone to plan of late, including when he was only third of four here last time as a short-priced favourite, but it's worth remembering that he was sent off just 6/1 for the Grand Annual Chase at the Cheltenham Festival only four starts ago.
Softer ground could help him settle and travel better, and the fitting of first-time cheekpieces looks a notable move - all three of his siblings have tried them, one winning in the headgear. If they have the desired effect, he's well capable of outrunning his price in this company.
