Pacific in fine form ahead of Breeders’ Cup mission

Andrew Balding is hopeful that Pacific Mission can run a big race in the Breeders’Cup Juvenile Turf despite her unfavourable draw out in stall twelve.

The Juddmonte-owned three-year-old created a nice impression when winning at Kempton second time out before losing little in defeat when upped to Group 2 level for the May Hill Stakes at Doncaster, keeping on strongly to fill the runner-up spot behind Aylin.

"I thought her run in the May Hill was very good and her work has been very good. That's why we were keen to come as she's looked pretty useful at home. We got the invite, so we're here," said Balding.

"Unfortunately, she's drawn a little wide which won't help, she's only having her fourth start and it's her first time around a bend so she's going to have to learn fast."

He added: "Precise is drawn wide as well so we're not alone but hopefully the race is run at a truly run pace and if stamina comes into play, that should help her."

Pacific Mission will not be the only horse to represent the colours of Juddmonte for team Balding at Del Mar this weekend, with Jonquil set to take on the likes of Notable Speech, The Lion In Winter and Sahlan in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Runner-up in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains at Longchamp earlier in the season, Jonquil will arrive in Del Mar with two good runs under his belt, winning the Celebration Mile at Goodwood before a staying-on fourth in the Coolmore Turf Mile Stakes.

"He ran very well in Keenland in the Coolmore Mile last time," said Balding. "He was staying on strongly, we had a wide draw that day, he was sat at the back and finished strongly.

"We've got a wide draw again but he's a high-class horse and he seems to be thriving on his travelling."

Balding's three-strong Breeders' Cup attack is rounded out by the talented See The Fire, who is a general 5/1 chance in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mares market as she steps up to one-mile and three furlongs for the first time.

He said: "I'm pretty confident about it (the trip) but again she's drawn widest of all in fourteen which is going to make life tougher for her. She is a closer, so hopefully they'll be running at a good pace.

"She needs an end-to-end gallop to aim at, and it will be interesting to see her over the extra furlong, that might just make a big difference.

"She ran a good race at Royal Ascot and ran a good race in France on ground that wouldn't have suited. She's very high class on her day but the only thing is it's the end of a long season."
