Charlie Appleby believes that course experience will stand Notable Speech in good stead as he bids for redemption in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Notable Speech could only finish third for favourite backers' when attempting to claim the Del Mar mile prize as a three-year-old, but Appleby believes his experience around the tight turns of the San Diego venue will be a major benefit as he bids to go two spots better in 2025.
"I don't think we saw the real Notable Speech last year," said the Godolphin handler. "You can't beat experience coming around these tracks. That was his first experience, bearing in mind that the horse has spent most of his career on a straight track. He finished third. For me, inexperience didn't pay."
The son of Dubawi has enjoyed something of a mixed campaign thus far, finishing fourth in both the Lockinge and Queen Anne before coming home fifth when dropped to six furlongs for the July Cup on Newmarket's July Cup.
"We started off in the Lockinge, we were happy with that run and fully expected the horse to come forward, we went to the Queen Anne, and it was one of those races you are just happy to try and forget.
"Needless to say, then we toyed with dropping back to the six because he just shows so much speed, as he showed in the Queen Anne, so we dropped him back for the July Cup and typically, they decided to split into three groups, and we were facing the breeze from the start."
Following his July Cup defeat, Notable Speech returned to a mile and looked unlucky not to bounce back to winning ways, rattling home from off the pace to go down by a head to Diego Velazquez in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.
"We then headed to Deauville, and it was my instructions to Will (Buick) to say, 'I don't care if you're going to be a hero or villain, bury this horse and let him come home the right way'. Will did that and unfortunately when you ask that, you need all the luck in the world, and it just didn't happen.
"What I loved in Deauville was that he showed the turn of foot that we've seen in the past."
Notable Speech did get his head back in front thanks to a successful first voyage to Canada in the Woodbine Mile last month and with that victory under his belt, Appleby believes his four-year-old is firmly back on the right track ahead of his Breeders' Cup bid.
He added: "We to Woodbine Mile and he did what was expected and gained experience on those turning tracks again.
"We're back on track after the Woodbine Mile on the inner track there – it's a tight track. He conducted himself well around there and put the race to bed nicely."
