Powerful Glory stuns Ascot with 200/1 Champions Sprint strike

Powerful Glory came with a powerful late run to deny Lazzat at odds of 200/1 in the Qipco British Champions Sprint at Ascot on Saturday.

Unbeaten in both starts and a winner of the Mill Reef last season, Powerful Glory finished last but one on his seasonal reappearance in the Sandy Lane Stakes before failing to beat a rival home in a five-furlong conditions race at Beverley last month.

Subsequently, with upwards of 20lb to find with some of his rivals on official ratings, Richard Fahey's charge was sent off a staggering 200/1 chance in the hands of Jamie Spencer, who was happy to bide his time off the pace for much of the contest.

It looked as though this year's Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes winner Lazzat was going to make a winning return to Ascot as he struck the front going great guns under James Doyle, but Spencer had yet to fully play his hand and delivered Powerful Glory with a late effort to nab Jerome Reynier's charge by the narrowest of margins.

66/1 shot Quinault finished back in third.

"He was undefeated as a two-year-old, including in the Mill Reef on ground no doubt he hated, so he surely was a decent horse there," said Fahey.

"The plan was to get him ready for the Commonwealth Cup, and we had our prep, and he just completely emptied, so we did some investigations, and he just had a tiny wind issue where he wasn't 100%, so of course we had to do the operation and recuperation.

"This race closed ages ago, so even after that first disappointing run, I had made the entry. I would have loved to get a run into him and the only one I could find was a five-furlong race at Beverley - I had to run him, and fair play to Sheikh Rashid, I said, sir, this horse will need this badly.

"I always love to get a run into them after a wind operation, to get a bit of confidence into them that they are right now. You could say he was disappointing, but I was delighted, if that makes sense, he was staying on again at the end of a sharp five at Beverley.

"Since then, he's been training extremely well; I'm not saying I thought he would come here and nearly win, but I knew he would do his best and when I saw 200/1, I nearly had a bet. I don't bet, but I nearly had a bet.

We've seen the real Powerful Glory today, and he's only had four [lifetime] starts. I'm just delighted for everybody; it's been a tricky year for us this year, and to finish with a Group 1 is fantastic, especially for Sheikh Rashid, who has been a huge supporter for me. It's always great to reward owners that are faithful to you."

Winning jockey Jamie Spencer added: "I've known Richard a long time so to do it for him is great. I saw he was 80-1 this morning and I remembered Khaadem was 80-1 when he won here, you just never know.

"Not in your wildest dreams are you expecting to win after he finished last in a conditions race at Beverley but that's what the good trainers do, they turn the screw.

"Two out I thought he was going to run a good race and then I suddenly felt we had a chance of winning, so it was a different set of emotions as the race progressed.

"I haven't got much road left in me, so I doubt I'll have another 200-1 winner!"
