King’s best bets - 18th October 2025

Sam King is back with two selections on Saturday

The flat season draws to a close this afternoon, but it looks set to go out on an absolute bang as a blockbuster cast assembles at Ascot on Champions Day.

With Field Of Gold, Ombudsman, Rosallion, Delacroix and Calandagan all out to strut their stuff, it should be nothing short of exceptional although finding the winners across the afternoon might prove somewhat trickier.

The trilogy between Ombudsman and Delacroix takes center stage in the Qipco Champion Stakes (4.05) at Ascot on Saturday and when throwing Calandagan in the mix it looks sure to be a mouthwatering affair. That said, I'm struggling to see how Delacroix reverses the placings with Ombudsman even after his facile success in the Irish Champion Stakes and dropping back to ten furlongs might not prove ideal for King George hero Calandagan, who also has shown a tendency to be slowly away.

With that in mind, Ombudsman can cement himself as the best middle-distance horse in Europe alongside Daryz and take his record to 2-1 vs Delacroix. A commanding winner over course and distance in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot, John and Thady Gosden's charge looked to hit the front too soon before being pegged back by Delacroix in the Coral-Eclipse before his ready success in the Juddmonte International at York.

He's been faultless barring his slight blip at Sandown and with the pacemaker set to do his job out in front once more, it's tough to see how Delacroix reverses the form with this proven course and distance winner.

Ombudsman – 2pt Win

Odds – 7/4

The Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes (2.05) looks wide open and I'm happy to take a chance on one of the French raiders.

However, not the well-fancied Lazzat, who just looked flat at Haydock last time out and will need to bounce back to his brilliant best. Instead, I'm going to side with the well-bred Blue Point filly Rayevka.

Trained by Francis-Henri Graffard, the Aga Khan-owned three-year-old impressed when winning in Listed company at Chantilly earlier in the season before putting up a clear career best when third in the Commonwealth Cup over course and distance at Royal Ascot in June.

Things haven't quite gone to plan since but there have been excuses as she clearly failed to stay the extended six furlongs in the Prix Maurice de Gheest before finishing a sharp five too short last time out.

Six furlongs on a galloping track like Ascot is clearly right up her street and with a frantic pace all but guaranteed, she should be doing her best work late on.

Rayevka – 0.5pt Each-way

Odds – 14/1
