Sam King tipped a 2pt winner at Kempton yesterday evening and is back with two selections on Tuesday.
Yarmouth's three-day John Musker meeting kicks off this afternoon and it's one I often look forward to.
Division looks like a colt of considerable potential in the opener, while the mile confined maiden is also an interesting affair that is well worth paying close attention to. However, the best wager on the card comes in the seven-furlong nursery (2.55), where Espona Bay is taken to get off the mark fourth time out for the Michael Bell and James Doyle combination.
Having shown clear promise in three qualifying outings in maiden/novice company, Espona Bay appeared to appreciate the switch to nurseries at Chelmsford last time out, keeping on strongly from off the pace to finish a clear-cut second to previous winner Demetrius, who has since finished a good third in a competitive Haydock contest to give the form a solid look. The third and fifth have also both run well since.
He was no match for the winner that day, but you would have to be pleased with the way that Espona Bay finished off his race in the closing stages there, shaping as though this step up to seven furlongs could bring out plenty more improvement.
Soft ground is a slight unknown, as it is for most of these juveniles, but he's by New Bay, whose progeny tend to handle cut in the surface, while the Michael Bell team arrive in fine fettle having saddled five winners from 19 runners (26% strike rate) over the last fortnight.
This colt is a confident selection to get off the mark here nudged up 2lb for his latest effort.
2pt Win – Espona Bay
Odds – 9/4
The other bet on the Yarmouth card comes in the penultimate six-furlong handicap (5.00), where I'm happy to take a very small chance on Spherical, who has no doubt been disappointing in her career to date.
Roger Varian's filly was sent off just 12/1 for the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot last season on the back of her debut success in a three-runner five-furlong maiden here. However, she's failed to really fill her pull potential since making that winning debut, despite recording a second success in a weak fillies' novice event at Kempton later in her juvenile campaign.
Finishing last of seven on her handicap debut and seasonal reappearance at Haydock in June wouldn't have exactly inspired leading connections Cheveley Park Stud, but there was some hope that she capable of being involved off this sort of mark when sixth at Kempton last time out.
Having been bumped at the start, Spherical shaped nicely enough under Ray Dawson on that occasion, making headway a furlong out before fading late on. She'll certainly need to take another step in the right direction here to be in the mix, but things weren't exactly plain sailing for her last time out and it's possible she might enjoy the return to the scene of her debut success with some ease in the ground.
At around 18/1, she looks a touch overpriced racing off a 2lb lower mark here.
1pt Win – Spherical
Odds – 18/1
