ITV Insights - 11th September 2025

The team assess the ITV action from Doncaster on Thursday.

R1 - British Stallion Studs 'Carrie Red' EBF Fillies' Nursery (13:15)

A strong renewal of the Carrie Red to open Doncaster's four-day St Leger meeting. William Haggas' Gwen John finds a suitable contest to go one better having endured a neck defeat on latest appearance in a 6f Carlisle novice. While Half Sovereign naturally commands respect in pursuit of four consecutive wins and pedigree suggesting that softening conditions underfoot ought to suit, she may have reached a plateau now upped 4lb for her latest Newmarket success. The form of the Haggas yard is also noted, with the Somerville Lodge handler operating at a 29.79% strike rate over the past 14 days.

R2 - Weatherbys Scientific 300,000 2-Y-O Stakes (13:50)

While highly regarded Ballydoyle inmate Brussels will command all the attention here dropping back to 6f, Clive Cox's Song Of The Clyde has a profile which suggests that this could be within reach. The progressive two-year-old handled a rise in class comfortably to prevail when last seen in a Sales Race at York, and handler Cox will be looking to settle a score as his Dragon Leader finished runner-up in this contest two years back after winning at the Knavesmire. Connections at Middleham Park Racing have already landed two Sales Races this season and have won six since 2022. This colt is more than capable of taking another step forward.

R3 - Betfred May Hill Stakes (14:25)

A classy line-up over a mile for fillies with potential to improve. Moon Target, representing Sir Mark Prescott, looks one of the likeliest to progress. She was runner-up to a promising Ballydoyle filly at Goodwood and steps up in trip with stamina likely to be in her favour. Prescott's capacity for eliciting the best from fillies advancing in distance is noteworthy, and the Heath House trainer's current strike rate of 28.57% over the past 14 days is another factor in her favour.

R4 - Betfred Park Hill Fillies' Stakes (15:00)

The feature staying fillies' contest for older horses. Sir Mark Prescott has a notable record with staying fillies, and his representative Consent appeals as one firmly on the upgrade. Proven over longer trips and bred to improve further with age, she holds leading claims on the back of a two-and-a-half length defeat in Group 3 company at Deauville. While Chorus commands respect given her Group-race experience, she has yet to deliver a fully convincing performance at this level and may prove vulnerable if stamina comes to the fore. Danielle, who shaped well on her return, has place claims on the back of three consecutive runner-up efforts.

R5 - Oddschecker Handicap (15:35)

First Principle is pitched into handicap company for the first time following a highly creditable Windsor success when sent off a very warm favourite. With a tongue-tie equipped for the first time, the yard in such good form, and a proven record on good to soft going, the three-year-old is expected to maintain the upward progression. Wolf Of Badenoch cannot be ruled out at long odds. While the gelding has disappointed somewhat this season, the yard landed this last year and he was placed in Group 2 company as a two-year-old.
