Sam King has landed three winners in his last two columns and returns with two selections on Tuesday.
There are few trainers in better form than William Haggas at present and although his record at Southwell isn't as eye-popping as at some other venues, you would be foolish to ignore his sole runner on the card there this evening.
Whilst Mahra's Love clearly isn't towards the top of Haggas' pecking order when it comes to quality horses this season, there's no doubt that she's been progressive since breaking the maiden tag in a Kempton handicap over seven furlongs back in June.
A commanding winner when stepped up to a mile at York for the first time a month later, Mahra's Love went on to finish a respectable sixth in a warmer handicap at Goodwood, a performance that can be upgraded given that she was forced to come wide in the straight before hanging right-handed late on.
That form looks solid, with the winner going on to finish fourth in Listed company next time out, while the third and fifth-placed horses went on to finish second and fourth respectively in a warm handicap at York's Ebor meeting.
A mark of 80 still looks workable for this improving daughter of Dark Angel and with Tom Marquand now in the plate, she can resume her winning ways back on an all-weather surface.
1pt Win - Mahra's Love
Odds – 15/8
Jennie Candlish has enjoyed a fine season to date, and it could be worth taking a chance on How's The Guvnor, who drops back to six furlongs for the first time since landing a Doncaster maiden in July 2023 in this evening's Class 6 handicap at Wolverhampton (8.45).
Once rated 88 for handler Clive Cox, How's The Guvnor has been nothing but regressive since, failing to find the winner' enclosure since and tumbling miles down the weights to a current rating of 59.
However, his run when beaten four and a half lengths at Doncaster wasn't devoid of promise, while he also signified that a drop back to six furlongs might work the oracle when eighth of nine at Ffos Las last time out, travelling up nicely behind the pacesetters for the first six furlongs before dropping away late on.
Early market signs have also been positive for this gelded son of Calyx this morning and from a good draw in gate three, things might just fall into place should he appreciate the drop back in trip.
1pt Win – How's The Guvnor
Odds – 6/1
