King’s best bets - 27th August 2025

Sam King returns with three selections on Wednesday.

Kempton hosts some interesting all-weather handicap action this evening, so that's where the bulk of our selections will come from but there is one progressive and in-form horse who catches the eye at Catterick this afternoon.

I'm a big fan of siding with horses at a low level that are just in the winning groove and Inspiring Speeches certainly fits the bill having landed his last two outings.

A snug half-length winner over ten furlongs at Beverley on soft ground in July, Sara Edner's charge appeared to relish the step up to a mile and a half when battling back bravely when pressed late on to score at this venue earlier this month.

He set some steady fractions out in front that day and gave the impression that there could be more to come with a stiffer stamina test, so I'm not at all surprised to see connections move him up a further two furlongs this afternoon.

Course form can also be pivotal at a tricky track like Catterick and he's just one of two horses here that have winning form in the book, with the other, Bollin Neil, often needing more ease in the ground.

A 1lb rise in the weight to 51, which is effectively 46 with Tom Kiely-Marshall taking off his 5lb once more, isn't any issue given that he was regularly placed off a mark of 56 over shorter trips last season. Add in the fact that he's unlikely to face much challenge for the leader and you'd have to think he has a huge chance of completing the hat-trick if seeing out this extra yardage.

1pt Win - Inspiring Speeches

Odds – 3/1

The opening maiden on the card at Kempton looks like an above-average affair. Moment Of Light should do better on this more galloping track following his eye-catching debut and it's no shock to see him head the market, but it could pay to side with Gavriel, who looked a surefire improver despite finishing last of four at Sandown first time out.

Despite just being four runners, the Sandown maiden looked like a useful one, with the market leader Corinth having already shown decent form behind this weekend's Solario bound Publish.

There was plenty of market support for Gavriel prior to the off but he never really looked like he was getting involved throughout, with Rab Havlin having to niggle and nurse his mount along up the straight. He looked fairly clueless under pressure in the straight, but he certainly wasn't losing any ground and smacked as a horse that could be set to take a big step forward from his first to second outing.

John and Thady Gosden landed this opening maiden on the card twelve months ago and they can do so once more with this well-bred son of Frankel, who looks like a surefire improver this evening.

1pt Win – Gavriel

Odds – 3/1

The seven-furlong fillies handicap on the card (7.07) looks like a fairly open affair. Tuesdays Child will prove popular from the foot of the weights under a penalty but she hasn't exactly earned top marks for consistency so far so it could be worth taking her on with Lady Manzor, who is somewhat top of the class in that category having finished in the top four on five of her eight starts.

A three-time winner on the all-weather this year, Lady Manzor returns to her preferred surface following some solid efforts on the turf, including when running on well from off the pace (missed the break) to finish fourth behind an all-the-way scorer at Newbury last time.

Amanda Perrett's filly will need a career best off this mark, but she's by no means yet fully exposed on this surface and has winning course and distance form in the book.

A customary hold-up performer, the presence of potential front runners Radiant Beauty, My Margie, Isabella Castile and Naina should suit Lady Manzor, who looks particularly interesting from her kind draw in stall three with Saffie Osborne taking the ride for the first time.

1pt Win – Lady Manzor

Odds – 11/2
