Sam King is back with two selections on Saturday, including a big fancy in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.
Ralph Beckett has endured a very much up and down season, which was highlighted by his week at Glorious Goodwood earlier in the month, but he arrives at Newbury with his string in good form and King's Gamble makes plenty of appeal at the prices in this afternoon's Hungerford Stakes (3.35).
Despite being slowly away, King's Gamble shaped with bundles of promise when runner-up over six furlongs in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at this venue last month. That was his first start for 351 days and it's likely he'll derive great benefit from that reappearance outing.
He was doing his best work late on that day and having run this season's Lockinge hero Lead Artist to within three parts of a length in the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes last year, Ralph Beckett's charge should relish stepping back up to seven furlongs.
There should be more to come from this four-year-old son of Kingman following just six starts and he's preferred to the well-fancied More Thunder, who will need to find extra based on his recent winning handicap form.
1pt Win – King's Gamble
Odds – 9/2
The Great St Wilfrid Handicap (3.20) at Ripon doesn't look as strong as it often does, while it will be interesting to see which side of the draw is favoured, if any
Saeed bin Suroor has already enjoyed fine handicap victories at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood this season and it's interesting that he saddles the unexposed City Walk, who shaped better than the bare result when ninth in a much warmer handicap at Newcastle last time.
He showed plenty of early dash that day before fading in the final furlong and there's certainly a chance that Sean Kirrane could boss this from the front with a potentially handy draw in stall three.
A mark of 98 on quick ground is no concern given he landed a Meydan handicap off 4lb higher in February, while he also went on to finish a close-up sixth in the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint at the same venue later in the season.
1pt Win – City Walk
Odds – 12/1
