Classy Camille Pissarro retired due to Eclipse injury

The top-class three-year-old Camille Pissarro has had his career on the track cut short due to an injury he picked up when running in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown earlier in the season.

Aidan O'Brien's son of Wootton Bassett enjoyed top level success as a juvenile when battling on well to deny Rashabar by a neck in last year's Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere.

Returned to France for his seasonal reappearance, Camille Pissarro lost little in defeat when third behind stablemate Henri Matisse in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains before relishing to step up in trip in the Prix du Jockey Club, keeping on stoutly in the closing stages to strike by half a length from Andre Fabre's Cualificar.

He lost little in defeat when fourth behind leading Juddmonte International contenders Delacroix and Ombudsman in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown but unfortunately picked up what has proved to be a career-ending injury in the process.

Explaining the decision to retire him, Aidan O'Brien told Coolmore: "Camille Pissarro pulled a shoe at Sandown and was quite sore afterwards.

"We had him X-rayed, and a fissure fracture was found in his fetlock. The decision was then made to retire him.

"Camille Pissarro was an extremely classy colt; he had speed and class. He won the Lagardere on Arc weekend last year at two, and then he showed everyone how good he was in the French Derby. He was very classy."

Camille Pissarro cost 1,250,000 Guineas at the Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale as a yearling and is a half-brother to seven winners, most notably the Group 1 scorer Golden Horde, who claimed the 2020 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot for Clive Cox.
