‘This looks like a good bit of placing’ - Sam King’s daily wagers

Sam King is back with three selections…

There's plenty of action to get stuck into on Friday with seven meetings on across the UK and Ireland.

Any racing fan should be encouraged to watch the opening three maidens and novice events at Newmarket this evening, which will surely provide some taking clues for the future, but with very little to no form on offer, it's hard to be confident about having a wager in them.

However, there are some good bets to be had elsewhere. Starting with Musselburgh, which sees the in-form James Owen send Far Above Dream to Scotland for the competitive seven-furlong handicap at 3.20.

James Owen's unexposed three-year-old made a taking stable debut when scoring at Bath earlier in the season before finding Class 2 company at York too taxing next time out.

However, back in calmer waters, he bounced back with a pleasing third-place finish at Epsom last time. It's easy to upgrade that performance given he made up plenty of ground from the back of the field before making his challenge, while it's also interesting that James Owen's sole other runner at this venue so far this year obliged.

He shaped as though stepping back up to seven furlongs for the first time since his debut in Ireland last year would suit and with further progress distinctly possible, he gets the vote to strike for a Newmarket-based handler that just seems capable of improving almost any type of horse.

1pt Win – Far Above Dream

Odds – 4/1

Just twenty minutes later, King's Crown looks good value in the five-furlong handicap over at Thirsk.

Trained by Michael Dods, King's Crown arrives at the top of his game having won two of his last three starts.

A comfortable scorer over course and distance earlier in the year, he returned to winning ways from a good second at Doncaster with a snug success at the same track last month.

Apprentice Rhys Elliott, who gets on well with this horse, is good value for his 5lb claim and given the manner of his latest victory, he could well prove capable of following up off just 4lb higher.

1pt Win – King's Crown

Odds – 9/2

William Haggas has had just three runners at Brighton this season, one of which found the winners' enclosure, while the other two filled the runner-up spot.

He sends two horses down to the south coast for the final day of their three-day summer meeting. Magic Stone looks to have excellent claims in the six-furlong maiden, while Another Abbot must have every chance in the feature at 3.30.

The former should take some beating so he's the sole selection on the Brighton card this afternoon. This looks to be a good bit of placing by the William Haggas team, with main market rival Rose Of Spain not guaranteed to stay these six furlongs.

In contrast, Magic Stone has already shown some fair form in defeat over the trip, including when second to the subsequent winner Amazing Journey, who has since also looked unlucky when fifth in a warm Goodwood nursery, at Chepstow two starts ago.

Tom Marquand's mount also looks tactically versatile having made the running when second back at Chepstow last time out and with experience on side, he looks ready to get off the mark at the third time of asking.

1pt Win – Magic Stone

Odds – 11/10
