Two Tribes landed something of a sizeable gamble when running out an emphatic winner of the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood on Saturday.
A winner of the competitive Moet & Chandon International Handicap over seven furlongs at Ascot last week, Two Tribes saw his price continuously slashed throughout the day and having been as big as 20/1 overnight, he was sent off a mere 11/2 to complete a historic double.
In the hands of David Egan once more, Two Tribes could be spotted moving into contention full of running as those on the near side hurtled on down towards the final furlong. Stablemate Run Boy Run was still holding sway at this point but once Egan said go on the son of Coventry Stakes hero Rajasinghe, he picked up readily to put the race to bed.
Richard Fahey's Strike Red stayed on well through rivals to claim the runner-up spot, but he never looked like troubling the commanding winner, who pulled clear to score by two and a half lengths.
Jakajaro finished back in third, while trainer Richard Spencer and owner Phil Cunningham were also responsible for the fourth and fifth home courtesy of Run Boy Run and Twilight Calls.
"I thought all three of them had really good chances," said Richard Spencer. "He's in great form and when you get a sprinter in this form, they are hard to beat.
"Two runs within seven days is hard for any horse but at this level it's even harder. They are not small fields, they are 28-runner races, and the tempo is hard, so for them to have the mindset to do this is crazy. I didn't expect him to win that far in a million years.
"It's a big testament to the staff at home and hopefully we can carry on now.
"We've got no immediate plans. We'll see what the handicapper does, he's probably going to get a bit of a whack from the handicapper on the back of that, so we'll let the dust settle."
Whilst Spencer has no immediate plans for his winner, he firmly believes that both the front-running Run Boy Run, who showed up well in the first-time visor, and the veteran Twilight Calls, will enjoy their day in the sun before too long.
He said: "Twilight Calls has got a good race in him. I just heard Ayr Gold Cup, so I'd say we'd be working back from that. He's got a big pot in him. Run Boy Run, the same, they are three really consistent sprinters, so we are lucky to have them."
Two Tribes was completing a memorable double for rider David Egan, who punched the air crossing the line.
"He actually did it easier today than in the International," said Egan. "He travelled into it lovely – Richard's other horse for George Wood showed more speed than Get It, which I was surprised with because you need to be a quick horse to do that.
"I knew at halfway we seemed to be ahead of the other group, and he was taking me there rather than me asking.
"He handles really tacky, testing conditions and was an easy winner. Not many horses can do the International-Stewards' Cup double."
