Sam King tipped Lady Iman to strike in the Molecomb Stakes yesterday and is sweet on another juvenile at Glorious Goodwood.
Ralph Beckett was widely considered as the most out of form trainer at the meeting at the beginning of the week and his luck didn't look like changing when Kinross, who was sent off a joint 3/1 favourite to claim a third Lennox Stakes, was forced to be withdrawn at the start after being kicked by Audience.
However, after saddling a dead-heat of winners in the Group 3 Oak Tree Stakes and watching his four-year-old Qirat stun his Sussex Stakes rivals at odds of 150/1 yesterday, it's probably fair to say his luck has changed.
He has a handful of interesting runners on the card this afternoon but none more so that Egoli, who smacked of a high-class performer when winning a novice event under a penalty at Newbury last time out and makes plenty of appeal in the Markel Richmond Stakes at 1.55.
This striking son of No Nay Never has something to find with some of the principals on official ratings but there appear to be question marks over those towards the top of the market. Clive Cox's Coppull looks the pick on the formbook, although I'm not convinced that the Coventry Stakes was the deepest of juvenile contests this year, while Maximized needs to bounce back from a below-par effort at Newmarket and Havana Hurricane has to prove he's fully effective back over six furlongs.
With that in mind, Egoli could easily prove capable of landing the spoils having clocked a decent time at York before his follow-up success at Newbury. On both occasions he appeared to just be doing enough out in front, so there's a strong suspicion that this better-quality opposition can bring out plenty of further improvement from this two-year-old, who is clearly held in some regard by Beckett.
1pt Win – Egoli
Odds – 13/2
Egoli might not be the only juvenile to strike for Ralph Beckett on the card. Victorious One looks to hold solid credentials now stepping into handicap company for the first time at 4.20.
Carrying the colours of Victorious Racing, this son of Siyouni, who is out of a Listed-placed Frankel mare, arrives to Goodwood having filled the runner-up spot on all three starts to date.
It's fair to say that he wouldn't be one for maximum faith after being turned over at odds-on the last twice, but his form continues to stack up and an opening mark of 85 is certainly tempting.
He came from off the pace when chasing home Goodwood Galaxy over this trip at Salisbury second time out, while connections opted for more forceful tactics when he was collared late-on by Big Song at Epsom last start. Those defeats may look disappointing on the face of it, but Goodwood Galaxy has since finished an eye-catching fourth in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes, while Big Song made his debut behind the unbeaten and Group 1-bound Zavateri, who claimed the aforementioned Group 2 in battling style earlier in the week.
Rossa Ryan should get a nice sit from stall six and with his form working out nicely, he's taken to score off an opening rating of 85.
1pt Win – Victorious One
Odds – 5/1
The five-furlong sprint for three-year-olds at 3.45 looks like a typically competitive affair, with the likes of The Man, Dan Tucker, Getreadytorumble and Ruby's Profit all making it onto the shortlist. However, I'm hoping that it proves wise to side with Marty Hopkirk.
It's interesting that Dave Loughnane has booked the services of Oisin Murphy for his three-year-old, who has improved with each outing to date and surely has more to offer following just four career runs.
He showed plenty of early dash when beating two subsequent scorers second time out over this trip at Wolverhampton, before outrunning odds of 80/1 when beaten four and a half lengths into fifth in Listed company at Sandown.
He looked to have plenty of his rivals in trouble prior to being collared late on his handicap debut at Doncaster last time, once again showing bundles of early speed.
With the likes of Ruby's Profit and Naana's Sparkle, who both like to set a fast early tempo, drawn close, Oisin Murphy could find that this sets up nicely for the son of Kodi Bear, who is selected to defy a 2lb nudge up the handicap.
1pt Win - Marty Hopkirk
Odds – 7/1
