A winner of the contest in 2021, the Alan King-trained popular nine-year-old was lining up in the race for the fourth time under Hollie Doyle.

However, he was pulled up by Doyle at the halfway stage, with news later emerging that the injury suffered had proved fatal.

Speaking on ITV Racing, James Given, the British Horseracing Authority's director of equine welfare, said: "I want to express my sincere condolences to all the connections, and anyone associated with the horse, no one is going to feel this more than them.

"He's been a stalwart, he's been a firm friend, he's been everything to them

"What has happened unfortunately is just an accident, mid-race, in a straight line going up a hill. His left-hind pastern broke and left him in a situation that wasn't recoverable from.

"Alan was able to get down there and assess him with the vet and they felt there was no option really but to put him down."

The son of Planteur was a three-time winner at the top-level and had amassed a sizeable following throughout his lengthy career.

As well as winning three times at the highest level, which included two victories in the Prix du Cadran, Alan King's loveable stayer also produced one of the all-time great weight-carrying performances when defying 10st 8lbs and a mark of 120 in the 2022 Northumberland Plate at Newcastle.

He was also a regular feature on British Champions Day and landed the Long Distance Cup on three separate occasions, with victories in the contest in 2020, 2021 and 2022.

Trueshan was ridden by Hollie Doyle on 23 of his 35 career starts, with the duo teaming up to find the winners' enclosure on 11 separate occasions.

Carrying the silks of the Barbury Lions and more recently the Singula Partnership, Trueshan amassed over £2 million in prize-money throughout his career.
