Charlie Appleby is looking forward to adding King’s Charter to his Meydan squad following an impressive success in the opening bet365 Handicap Stakes at Newmarket.
Gelded following two fair efforts as a two-year-old, King's Charter made a smooth winning return to action over a mile at Doncaster earlier in the season and was sent off the 9/4 market leader on handicap debut at Newmarket.
Held up off the pace by the in-form William Buick, the son of Kingman picked up strongly down the centre of the track to get the better of Charlie Johnston's Marhaba Ghaiyyath by three parts of a length.
"We felt that when Dougie (Costello) rode him last time at Doncaster, which was a decent novice, that he brought a decent level here today," said Appleby.
"We thought stepping up to ten (furlongs) would definitely suit. I think ten furlongs is a nice trip for him at the moment.
"He's probably still a handicapping type at the moment. We'll see what the handicapper does and see where he lines up in the Meydan team.
"It's that time of year – from July onwards we start to put our team together for Meydan. Whether he's a horse that fits that bill, we'll see.
"Is he a Group horse? Probably not really, but he's a nice handicapper."
Later on the card, Ian Williams saddled the first and third home in the valuable bet365 Trophy (Heritage Handicap).
Williams, who also had the favourite in Dancing In Paris, admitted he hadn't particularly noticed both Oneforthegutter and Real Dream creeping into contention as he was "pulling his hair out" at watching his chief hope pull his chances away on the front end.
However, it eventually proved to be Oneforthegutter who would come home best of all to claim the prize by half a length from the Charlie Appleby-trained Endless Victory under Silvestre De Sousa.
"Things have just fallen right for him," said Williams. "Unfortunately, Dancing In Paris got very keen and ran away with Marco.
"It wouldn't have been our intention to have been out there (in-front) and I was actually pulling my hair out and not really noticing the other two creeping into it.
"He's an amazing little horse. We bought him as a breeze-up, I think he won as a first-starter two-year-old and he's still going in one mile six-furlong races now.
"He's a great horse. The guys at home will be delighted. They deserve to have a good winner and are great supporters of racing."
