‘He gets the vote to overcome that potential barrier’ - Sam King’s daily wagers

Sam King is back with two selections on Tuesday.

There's a good-quality Class 2 handicap on offer at Musselburgh (3.00), where Castle Stuart looks to hold compelling claims and, in my opinion, should be shorter in the market.

A progressive two-year-old until something was clearly amiss when beaten 82 lengths in the Listed Silver Tankard Stakes at Pontefract on his final outing, Karl Burke's charge returned to action with a pleasing effort when steadily keeping on into third over a mile here in April.

He shaped as though he desperately needed the run on that occasion, becoming outpaced at the two-furlong marker before sticking to the task well-enough once finding a second wind late on.

The winner Thunder Wonder is now 12lb higher following a second success at Musselburgh, while he also finished a highly creditable sixth in a competitive handicap at the Curragh on Irish Derby weekend. We Dare To Dream finished five and a half lengths adrift of the winner that day but went one spot better on his next outing at Beverley before finishing a good third behind Thunder Wonder in the aforementioned course handicap in June, giving the form plenty of substance.

A sizeable son of Dubawi, Castle Stuart should relish stepping up this extra furlong and if taking a step forward fitness-wise as expected, he would have every chance off an unchanged mark of 86.

1pt Win – Castle Stuart

Odds – 7/2

Our last two wagers come from Chelmsford, with a decent eight-race card on offer at the Essex all-weather venue this evening.

It is stayers to the fore in the two-mile Class 3 handicap at 8.30 this evening, where Anzac Day looks fair value stepping up in trip for both Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy.

With the Balding team firing in 16 winners from 80 runners over the last 14 days, there's certainly no query about stable form, while Oisin Murphy continues to ride out of his skin despite the dark cloud that hangs above him.

Stall eleven won't make life easy for Anzac Day, but there's a strong suspicion that he's better than his opening mark of 85.

An impressive winner of a ten-furlong maiden on soft ground at Newmarket in October 2023 left connections dreaming of a possible Epsom Derby candidate, although those dreams were dashed when he missed the whole of his three-year-old season and was gelded.

However, he still remains a horse with considerable potential for connections. He shaped nicely when finishing fourth on his belated reappearance at Kempton before Oisin Murphy weighed in light and he was subsequently disqualified, while he produced an effort full of promise over one mile six when fifth of eight at Goodwood in May.

The form of that Goodwood outing has taken some notable boosts since, with French Master, who is now being touted as a potential Cup horse, going on to land the Copper Horse Stakes in fine fashion at Royal Ascot a fortnight ago. Ian Williams' Dancing In Paris finished a highly creditable third in that Goodwood contest and also gave the form a nice timely boost by finishing an agonising runner-up in the valuable Northumberland Plate at Newcastle last weekend.

Stepping up to two miles for the first time looks sure to suit on both pedigree and run style, and although as pointed out, stall eleven makes life trickier, he gets the vote to overcome that potential barrier and make a winning handicap debut.

1pt Win – Anzac Day

Odds – 5/1
