The Aidan O’Brien-trained Lambourn emulated sire Australia to become the twentieth horse to complete the Anglo-Irish Derby double at the Curragh on Sunday.
Given a front-running ride by Wayne Lordan to steal an easy success at Epsom, it was up to the son of Australia to prove that his Derby victory had not been a fluke and he faced a competitive field, including the second and third from Epsom – Lazy Griff and Tennessee Stud. With Ryan Moore aboard, tactics remained similar with Lambourn always sat prominently at the head of the ten-strong field alongside UK raider Sir Dinaden, who was keen to ensure that the Ballydoyle colt did not have his own way at the front.
It was stablemate Serious Contender who posed the major challenge in the closing 400m, looming alongside Lambourn in the hands of Gavin Ryan. Lambourn battled hard for a three-quarter length success with Epsom Derby second Lazy Griff making up eye-catching late ground to finish third.
The success marked a seventeenth win in the Irish Derby for trainer Aidan O'Brien, who said: ""He's a very straightforward horse that gets the trip well,.
"Ryan was going to be happy if someone came with him as that keeps him focused. He's a little bit laid-back, a little bit lazy and you could see up the straight he was waiting all the time but that's him. Ryan gave him a lovely ride.
"Ryan thought he would keep pulling out and he was pricking his ears all the way.
"He could be a King George horse, he could be an Arc horse. He gets the trip well and is very sound and very genuine.
"We minded the second horse for a handicap in Ascot that we thought he couldn't get beat and then a horse came and beat us that was entered in the King George so it just goes to show what can happen."
Lambourn is the second foal out of Gossamer Wings, who was placed at Group level multiple times as a juvenile.
