‘She represents a handler who knows what it takes to land this contest’ - Sam King’s daily wagers

There is competitive action across the country on Thursday, with Newmarket's July course, Newcastle and Nottingham all hosting interesting programmes.

Our first wager comes from Newcastle, where I'm hopeful that Penzance can bounce back to something near his best now returned to an artificial surface in the ten-furlong Class 2 handicap at 3.10.

Michael Appleby's charge hasn't been at his peak on the turf on his last two outings, although he did finish a highly creditable fifth in the Thirsk Hunt Cup in May.

Last seen on the all-weather when winning a handicap over this trip at Chelmsford earlier in the year, he went on to finish three lengths behind the talented Salamanca BetUK All-Weather Easter Classic Middle Distance Handicap over course and distance next time out.

Back down to the same mark (93) that he won off at Chelmsford, Mick Appleby's five-year-old previous course and distance scorer looks to have every chance of going close back on a surface that suits.

1pt Win – Penzance

Odds – 4/1

Just thirty-five minutes later on the same card, William Haggas can continue his excellent run in the JenningsBet In Kippax Seaton Delaval Handicap (3.45) thanks to Godwinson.

The Newmarket-based handler has won the last two renewals of this thanks to Lattam and Elnajmm, so it's likely he'll have had this race in mind ever since Godwinson weaved his way to the narrowest of victories in the Lincoln at Doncaster 89 days ago.

He looked value for more than the winning margin when scoring at Doncaster after he had to wait for the gaps to open before making his challenge, while this stiff mile at Newcastle looks almost certain to be right up his street.

The booking of first-string rider Tom Marquand adds further confidence to the selection and this progressive five-year-old can defy the 5lb rise in the weights to ensure William Haggas walks away with the prize once again.

2pt Win – Godwinson

Odds – 7/4

Over in headquarters, the Listed Empress Fillies' Stakes takes centre stage at 3.35, with eight two-year-olds going to post for what looks like an informative affair.

The booking of Ryan Moore on impressive Windsor maiden winner Bella Lyra catches the eye, while Listed National Stakes scorer Anthelia and Hillary Needler winner Argentine Tango bring some solid form to the table. It would also be foolish to ignore the claims of impressive Leicester debut winner Amberia.

However, at the current prices, I'm happy to side with Ed Walker's filly Midnight Tango in the hope that she can waltz her way to another success in the contest for a yard going great guns at present.

Ed Walker has run just two horses in this race over the last ten years, and both have claimed the gold medal spot, with Royal Intervention landing the prize in 2018 before the classy Celandine took this en-route to victory in York's Lowther Stakes last season.

There's no doubt that Midnight Tango will need to do more than what she achieved when winning a Hamilton maiden last time out, but she was well-backed to do so that day and is clearly held in some regard by her handler, who very much knows what it takes to land this contest.

This daughter of Night Of Thunder should be suited by six furlongs on the July Course, and she looks well worth siding with at the current prices.

1pt Win – Midnight Thunder

Odds – 11/2
