Lazzat aiming for back-to-back victories in Prix Maurice de Gheest

Jerome Reynier enjoyed a Royal Ascot full of highs and lows after Lazzat’s victory in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Stakes and the disappointment of Facteur Cheval earlier in the week.

Success in the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Stakes was arguably a career-best effort from Lazzat, who enjoyed an excellent three-year-old campaign for former owner Nurlan Bizakov when taking the Prix Maurice de Gheest before finishing second in the Group 1 Golden Eagle in Australia.

The half-length success over Japanese raider Satono Reve marked a return to the form for the gelding, who had been defeated on his seasonal reappearance at Saint Cloud over a trip longer than ideal.

Speaking to Sky Sports Racing, Jerome Reynier said: "For sure, he is going to try to defend his crown in this race. He's got the French owners premiums, which add a little bit more prize money to the race itself, and 1300m is a bit like the six furlongs at Ascot. You need a sprinter that can stay a little further, so that is exactly what he is, so I think that this race will suit him well once again.

"On the European racing programme Haydock and Ascot are the next steps. Obviously he doesn't mind the ground as he has been racing on heavy ground, so the plan would be to stick to the European Group 1 sprinting races, and Haydock and Ascot could be the next targets for him. But, we're going to take it one race after the other, so we're going to focus on August 10th in Deauville for the Prix Maurice de Gheest and after we will make some new plans. He's still a young sprinter, and normally they get better with age. Maybe, the best is still to come."

Reynier raised criticism of Flavien Prat's ride on his other stable star, Facteur Cheval, in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes earlier in the week. The globetrotting gelding settled midfield and appeared to making promising progress when reaching the front with two furlongs to run, but ultimately faded to finish eight-and-a-quarter lengths sixth behind Ombudsman.

Reynier has identified Munich's Group 1 Bayerisches Zuchtrennen as Facteur Cheval's next destination. He said: "The plan would be to go to Munich next time. I won this race with Skalleti a few years ago. Munich is a lovely track and I don't see why he wouldn't stay the trip."
