Woodworth back to show who’s Boss

Just a week after coming out of retirement, jockey Benny Woodworth landed his first comeback win when he piloted Platinum Boss to victory in a Class 4B sprint over 1150m on the No. 2 track at Sungai Besi on Saturday.

The veteran ride bowed out of the scene last year with a triumphant performance at the People's Turf PLC International Jockeys' Weekend in Mauritius, where he clinched the individual title and helped secure the team victory for Malaysia.

But the lure of the sports of kings proved too much for the 51-year-old, leading to his return last week when he finished in the money thrice without winning.

Astride Platinum Boss , Woodworth judged the race to perfection, showing just why he won multiple titles in Malaysia, Singapore and Mauritius.

Woodworth had Platinum Boss running in midfield early with Magic Captain leading the way from Pacific Sonic, Jungle King and Cash Cove.

Platinum Boss closed in on the leaders passing the 800m to be fourth turning for home.

Magic Captain led by a length at the top of the straight from Pacific Sonc with another two lengths to Jungle King and Platinum Boss.

Magic Captain was three lengths clear of Pacific Sonic at the 300m. Platinum Boss was by now just getting into top gear and going after the leaders.

Platimnum Boss swept past a tiring Magic Captain at the 100m and drew away to win by 2-1/2 lengths. Elliot Ness finished strongly to be a clear second with Cash Cove winning a four-way battle for third placing.

"I'm very happy, very glad to be back riding winners again. Nothing like coming back and riding horses," said Woodworth.

"The 13 months of retirement wasn't easy and I am grateful to the Selangor Turf Club for granting me a licence."

On Platinum Boss, he said: "Looking at all his past races, it looked like he's got a strong finish. I thought if he could just keep up with the pace he could finish well and win, and that's just what he did."

It was perfect start for Woodworth's partnership with trainer Ricky Choi.

"I first met him as fellow jockeys in Macau when I was still riding there," said Choi.

"He did a superb job on Platinum Boss.

"Platinum Boss just could not keep up with the pace in his last two starts but he was down in Class 4B for the first time today."

It was the first win in nine starts in Malaysia for Platinum Boss (formerly City Gold Mars) who raced for three seasons in Macau for four wins at 1200m.
