Fortune Tree continued to bring riches for his connections with his third win in five starts in the country in the Class 3 handicap over 1300m at Sungai Besi today.
A debut win back in August was followed up by two minor placings, then another success in a Class 3 race over 1200m last month.
The Ardrossan galloper was backed down to odds-on today and was fully tested before prevailing against a very determined Hurricane.
Fortune Tree was amongst a line of three horses vying for the early lead with Hurricane and Groovy.
Hurricane eventually took charge and set the pace with Fortune Tree to his outside and Groovy following closely in third place. Sincefoon Hero, Banker's Pretty and Valois were in a line next.
Hurricane had a clear lead at the 600m but Fortune Tree quickly closed the gap making the turn into the straight. They were followed by Groovy, Sincefoon Hero and Banker's Pretty who took the turn wide.
Fortune Tree levelled up with Hurricane at the 200m and from there they fought stride-for-stride the rest of the way, with Fortune Tree winning by a neck. Debutant Banker's Pretty finished strongly in third place.
"He (Fortune Tree) is a nice horse," said trainer Richard Lim.
"I have no specific plan for him at the moment but will consider running him in the Coronation Cup (on Nov 16) in Ipoh."
"It was a hard tussle at the start and I was lucky to be able cross inside (from barrier 8)," said winning jockey Ridzuan Shafiq.
"The leader (Hurricane) set a nice pace which was good for him (Fortune Tree) and he travelled nicely under me.
"In the straight, he gave everything."
Fortune Tree (formerly Jazzclub) was bought for A$230,000 as a yearling.
He was lightly raced in Australia with a win (at Seymour) and a third (at Sandown) in two runs at two. He finished on board twice in three more starts at three before he was sold for A$70,000 at an online sale.
