Energy Baby snapped a losing sequence of eight runs to cause an upset in the Supreme A sprint (1100m) at Sungai Besi today.
The son of Rich Enuff came over from Singapore with a record of five wins at Kranji and got his Malaysian campaign off to a promising start with two wins in his first four runs in the country.
But his form deserted him after that. Tried as he might, over distances from 1100m to 1600m, he could finish no better than fifth in those eight outings.
Meanwhile, Pacific Vampire has proven to be a formidable sprinter with four wins in the country in the last few months to add to his four victories achieved in Singapore last year.
Pacific Vampire, with his brilliant early speed, was considered to be to speedy for his rivals in today's set-weight contest and punters went to town on him, installing him odds-on favourite (RM7).
Half way through the race, you would not have faulted his backers if they started queueing up at the windows for the winnings.
Pacific Vampire, spotting blinkers for the first time, as expected jumped well and immediately went to the front on settling down.
From the 800m, Pacific Vampire pulled away from the rest of the field, going further and further ahead as the race progressed.
At the top of the straight, he was some ten lengths clear of Super Baby with Bransom in third spot. Energy Baby was next.
Pacific Vampire was still eight lengths clear of the field coming to the 200m. But shortly after, Bransom and Energy began to pick up momentum and went after the leader. And Big Union, who was near last eartly, also started to power home.
Closing the gap rapidly in the final 100m, Energy Baby got up in the past few strides to win by a neck from Big Union who was 'flying' at the finish, giving trainer Jerome Tan the quinella – a repeat of the results in Energy Baby's last win back in April.
Bransom also got up to beat Pacific Vampire for third placing.
"I gave him (Energy Baby) a brief let-up after his last win and that was the key to today's success," said trainer Jerome Tan.
"Because of the spell I wasn't that confident of a win."
Energy Baby, ridden by leading jockey Andre Da Silva, paid RM147 for a win.
