Two rising stars – Hypeman and Fortune Tree – continue to impress by winning the two Class 3 races over 1200m at Sungai Besi today.
Whereas Hypeman failed to land a blow in this year's RM1mil Selangor Mile, Fortune Tree looks a real prospect in next year's edition of the race for four-year-olds.
Hypeman, who had a win and six placings in good company in Australia, won his local debut in June.
After his Selangor Mile outing, he went down second to Fortune Tree – on his local debut – in a Max Two race over 1275m on the No. 2 track.
But Hypeman turned the tables when they met next, also in a Max Two event, but this time over 1300m on the long course. That was three weeks ago.
Hypeman was the first to go into battle today.
He was amongst a bunch of horses vying for the early lead. Pacific Hero, from a wide barrier, eventually took command on stettling down ahead of January. Witnessimpact, Cinnamon Blaze and Colonel Son were in a line next followed by Hypeman.
Pacific Hero led in the straight just ahead of Witnessimpact. January, Cinnamon Blaze and Colonel Son were in a line next with Hypeman and Popeyethesailorman switching out wide for their runs.
Witnessimpact collared Pacific Hero at the 200m but soon after January and Hypeman also staked their claims.
In a blanket finish, Hypeman got up to beat January by a neck with a further neck to Flying Nemo who was 'flying' in the closing stages on the rails.
"The pace was pretty hard today so I was able to sit him back behind the leaders," said jockey Harmeet Singh Gill who was riding him for the first time.
"At the top of the straight, I had the chance to switch out and then save him for a late bid. He finished well."
"Hypeman was up in Class 3 for the first time today," said Dunderdale. "It was a nice win and well-ridden by Gill."
Fortune Tree was one of the firsts to break but jockey Riduan Shafiq held him back to allow Dancing Light to take the lead from Pacific MV. Fortune Tree was pulling his head off early on the inside of Boss Baby and Shimi Go.
Pacific MV led into the straight sandwiched between Dancing Light and Shimi Go. Fortune Tree was stalking them next.
Fortune Tree charged at Pacific MV inside the final 100m to win drawing away by 1-1/4 lengths. Pacific MV held on for second ahead of the fast-finishing Duma who was second last the 600m.
"The horse (Fortune Tree) was just too good today with the light weight (52.5kg)," said Shafiq who completed a treble with the win. He has scored on Gold Medal Rose and Winning Sumphony earlier.
"He tries his best all the time and he has got a bright future."
Fortune Tree cost A$260,000 as a yearling and won over 1300m at Seymour, then finished third over the same trip at Sandown in two runs at two in Australia. He had two fourth-place finishes in just three starts at three and was sold for A$70,000 at an online sale.
"He seems like a very smart horse and can handle any distance," said trainer Richard Lim.
"Lucky to have him in my yard. It's hard to find horses like him."
Lim had Elite Boy in the Selangor Mile this year. Since that run, the horse has gone to win back-to-back races over 1775m and 1800m.
