Thunderous lived up to his name when he stormed home in the final 100m to capture the RM62,000 Tabcorp Trophy over 1200m at Sungai Besi here today – thanks to a brilliant ride by visiting South African jockey Kaidan Brewer.
Caught wide from the start after jumping from barrier 11, Brewer had to settle well off the lead in eighth spot early.
Pacific Vampire as usual set the pace with Platinum Fort chasing the leader. Bransom was next followed by Witnessimpact and Noah Khan. The order was still the same when the field turned into the home straight.
Pacific Vampire kicked away at the top of the straight and was well clear of the field at the 300m. But with 100m to go, Noah Khan was charging home on the outside with Witnessimpact.
Noah Khan was momentarily in front, just ahead of Witnessimpact, 50m out when Thunderous 'flew' home on their inside.
Thunderous got up in the last couple of strides to win by a neck from Noah Khan. Witnessimpact was a further half a length away third.
"He jumped well (from barrier 11) but I could not get to the inside so I just had to ride along," said Brewer who is making his maiden visit there.
"In the straight I planned to take him (Thunderous) out but the horse in front shifted out. Halfway down the straight I was denied another chance to shift out. Then a gap appeared in the inside of runners.
"I sent Thunderous through and we got there just in time.
"The track here is faster than what we have at home (in South Africa).
"I am happy to ride a winner on my first visit here."
Trainer Simon Dunderdale is full of praise for Thunderous and Brewer.
"He (Thunderous) seldom run a bad race."
"We have tried him over longer trips (and though he won) but his best trip seems to be 1200m.
"With him, we can place him anywhere we want.
"He is a horse with vast potential and a bright future.
"And what a brilliant ride by Brewer."
