Lucky Magic overcame a check in the running to claim a third Malaysia Group 1 when he powered home to win an incident-packed RM300,000 Selangor Gold Cup over 1600m at Sungai Besi today.
Halfway through the set-weight event, the favourite Platinum Emperor took stumbled and dislodged jockey Marc Lerner. The incident also brought down two other jockeys – Kaydan Brewer on Valois and Khairil Zulkiflee on Good Star.
In front, Berry Bliss and Pacific Warrior disputed the early lead with Pacific Warrior eventually taking charge. Berry Bliss settled in second spot ahead of Raising Sixty-One, Platinum Emperor, Filial Dragon and Lucky Magic.
Pacific Warrior led into the straight from Berry Bliss. They were well clear of Filial Dragon and Raising Sixty-One and Lucky Magic whose rider Andre Da Silva had to take evasive action when Platinum Emperor dislodged his rider.
Pacific Warrior was holding off Berry Bliss at the 200m when Lucky Magic began to open up in fine style and coming after the two leaders.
Lucky Magic hit the front 100m out to win drawing away by 3-1/4 lengths. Berry Bliss managed to beat Pacific Warrior by half a length for second.
"He (Lucky Magic) is a superstar," said trainer Winson Cheng Han Yong.
"He lost his momentum when Da Silva had to take evasive action and raced wide thereafter. But he still came home strongly like he always does.
"He will run next in the Sports Toto Challenge Cup next month, then the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor in December.
"We plan to run him overseas after that but nothing is confirmed for now."
Lucky Magic has now nine wins and two seconds in 14 starts.
