Fright sets new course record in runaway win

A maiden in Australia – but was placed in three of his four runs at two and three years old Down Under – Fright is sending shivers down the spine of his rivals in Malaysia.

The Brazen Beau galloper made a big impression on his local debut three weeks ago when he easily accounted for a Class 5B field over 1150m on the No. 2 track, winning by 3-3/4 lengths.

And the four-year-old raised his performance up several notches when he set a new course record time over 1275m on the inside track in a Class 4A contest at Sungai Besi today in which he started at a prohibitive odds (RM6 on the win tote).

Involved in an early tussle with Baby Twins and Otahuhu, the four-year-old surged to a clear lead approaching the 800m and never looked back after that with Khaw Chun Kit astride for the second time.

Khaw took a peep at the 200m but the challengers were nowhere to be found.

Fright  was hardly out of second gear when he romped to the line six lengths clear in a time of 1 min. 14.21 seconds, slicing 0.69 second off the previous record set by Elite Remarkable (now remaned Colonel Chief) set in 2022.

"A strong and condident ride from Khaw," said trainer Simon Dunderdale. "It's on to Class 3 now!"

"He (Fright) is a beautiful horse and was in a different class today," said Khaw.

"Since the horse arrived from Australia, I have been working him almost every morning.

"He showed a lot of abiltiy from day one. We will keep increasing the distance (of his races) and I believe that one day he will run in a Cup race."

Fright was the only favourite to reward punters today.

Meanwhile, Pahlawan, who has been unplaced in three starts, created a huge upset when he took out the Open Maiden event over 1020m, returning RM286 on the win tote.
