Race 1
1 Cashla Bay
Is on the short turnaround after running an honest race for 3rd at her first start for Terri Rae last week. She looks extremely well placed in this company and is likely to push forward from the wide draw. The drop back to 1200m suits and she shapes as very hard to beat in this company.
Race 2
1 Ifyoustartmeup
Is a 4yo Darci Brahma gelding resuming, last sighted at the races in April. He has trialled very nicely ahead of his return and draws the inside marble for this first-up assignment. Expect him to get back on the fence and look to thread through late. A solid each way chance.
Race 3
1 Rollins
Is an ex-northerner having his first South Island run for Lance Robinson. His recent trial win suggested he has acclimatised well and is forward enough to run a bold race fresh. The draw is sticky, but he finds a winnable maiden.
Race 4
4 Blue Goddess
Ran a huge race for 2nd at Riccarton last start, sitting wide without cover throughout yet still finished off strongly late. She backs up quickly and should relish another firm surface. With any luck from the wider alley, she will take plenty of beating.
Race 5
2 Cluedo Lane
Was outclassed last start in the TAB Mile, but his run prior for 2nd behind Spot On Time was excellent. He maps to lead this small field as he likes and should be given every chance to replicate that bold effort from two back. A major player.
Race 6
10 Steezy
Steezy has her first start in the South Island for Andrew Carston here. She was last seen finishing 9th in the Wanganui Guineas, where she didn't handle the conditions. Much better suited on top of the ground here and gets Kylie Williams from a middle draw. It's a decent maiden, but she looks the one they have to beat if she runs up to her northern form.
Race 7
13 Cocomara
A total forgive after Riccarton last week where she never travelled and possibly resented the nose band, which now comes off. Her prior form was more than good enough for a maiden of this depth. Kate Hercock takes over from a handy draw. Hard to beat.
Race 8
5 Buster Shaw
Buster Shaw (#5) has been luckless in two runs this prep and now finds himself third-up in a moderate R65. He showed glimpses of ability last campaign and should improve sharply if he can obtain a smoother run in transit here. Happy to speculate on him at the price.
Race 9
1 Ess Vee Are
Ess Vee Are was good running 4th first-up in the South Island for Andrew Carston, but his next three efforts have been well below his best. This R75 field lacks depth and he carries only 58kg after the claim. Back onto firmer footing is ideal for him. If ridden more conservatively, an improved showing would not surprise.
