Awapuni Picks - Saturday, 2 August

Awapuni Synthetic Race 1
3 Uncle Ken

Uncle Ken (#3) ran a bold race on debut at this course and distance, rallying late to grab third after looking flat turning for home. With natural improvement from that run and an inside gate to aid his cause, he maps to land just behind the speed and looks hard to beat.

Awapuni Synthetic Race 2
6 Flying Celebration

Flying Celebration (#6) hasn't appeared to handle Heavy ground this campaign his overall record on Heavy tracks suggesting otherwise. A raft of gear changes by the stable could spark improvement, and she is having her first crack on the synthetic surface, which may suit her better. Maps to do no work from the inside draw and is capable of bouncing back in an even lineup.

Awapuni Synthetic Race 3
1 Verardino

Verardino (#1) was beaten nearly 48 lengths first-up on a bog at Hawera but that run is best ignored. He should be much better suited to the polytrack and steps into a very moderate field. Needs to lift, but this looks his chance to recapture something close to his best.

Awapuni Synthetic Race 4
3 Lurch

Lurch (#3) took a while to get going last time over 1700m here but was strong through the line. That effort suggests the rise to 2140m will suit. He'll drift back as usual but should be powering home late.

Awapuni Synthetic Race 5
6 Toronto

Toronto (#6) makes his debut for a barn that's flying here at their home track. He's trialled up well and should get a perfect trail just off a strong tempo. If he runs up to his trial, he should give this a big shake.

Awapuni Synthetic Race 6
3 Exaggeration

TIP OF THE DAY
Exaggeration (#3) was luckless last start after being trapped wide from gate one yet still finished off bravely for second. Expecting Bruno will be more positive early from a better draw, and with main rival Colonel Warden drawn wide, he gets his chance. Looks well placed to go one better.

Awapuni Synthetic Race 7
3 Stonybreck

Stonybreck (#3) has mixed his form this prep but finds a very suitable race here. Opie Bosson is back and can offset what is a tricky draw on paper. He will likely be looking for cover midfield behind a strong tempo. Just needs even luck to be right in the finish.

Awapuni Synthetic Race 8
11 Sweet As Tavi

Sweet As Tavi (#11) was only fair first-up over 1200m but looks better suited rising to 1400m here. The addition of blinkers should sharpen her up, and with natural fitness improvement, she could be an improver at odds.
