Riccarton Park Race 1
7 Hidalgo
Hidalgo (#7) makes his jumping debut for Niall Quinn and looks well-placed to make a strong start to his hurdles career. He won a trial over the jumps prior to his recent flat runs, and with Ellie Callwood claiming 3kg, he drops to a manageable 66kg. Looks a solid kick-off point in this grade.
Riccarton Park Race 2
4 Dictation
Dictation (#4) will be much better suited back over the hurdles after a plain effort on the flat last time out. He's likely to push forward and take control of the race from the front. If he brings anything like his Waikato Hurdle-winning form from two starts back, he'll prove tough to catch.
Riccarton Park Race 3
4 Rubirosa
Rubirosa (#4) debuts for Kevin Myers, and it is always worth noting when he brings these lightly tried youngsters south. His recent trial win was full of merit and he handled the Heavy ground well. With Tina Comignaghi riding and a handy gate, he gets every chance to start his career in the right fashion.
Riccarton Park Race 4
4 Express Coup
Express Coup (#4) had little go her way last time out at Oamaru, a track that can trip up many at the best of times. She now gets a much better draw and with Tina taking the ride, a significantly improved effort can be expected with even luck in running.
Riccarton Park Race 5
3 Jesko
Jesko (#3) produced a brave second on the flat since his Wellington Steeplechase win two starts back. He sticks to the same weight due to the engagement of West Coast and looks ideally placed with just 66kg on his back. If he holds that form, he'll be awfully hard to beat.
Riccarton Park Race 6
1 Cypress
TIP OF THE DAY
Cypress (#1) chased home the progressive Ma Te Wa last start and looked very sharp in a subsequent trial. The wide draw shouldn't pose issues down the chute, and this looks a nice setup to return to go one better.
Riccarton Park Race 7
6 Lady Bankside
Lady Bankside (#6) was game last start when running third after doing work early. She maps to sit outside likely leader Magnastar here without doing too much early. If they run it at a moderate-even clip, she'll be right in the finish.
Riccarton Park Race 8
10 Fablue
Fablue (#10) found the line well for fourth at Oamaru last start when ridden quietly. The wide draw may prove an advantage by this time of day, with horses likely scouting wide for better ground. Could be one to watch late at a price. Worth a small speculative each way play.
Riccarton Park Race 9
14 He's Tunza Grunt
In a very even edition of the Winter Cup, He's Tunza Grunt (#14) shapes as a nice speculative each-way play in the race for mine. He'll get back from the draw but a solid tempo should allow him to wind up into it, and he'll be finishing off wide on the better ground late.
Riccarton Park Race 10
2 Proserve
Proserve (#2) is gradually finding form and comes into this off a couple of encouraging efforts. With the track likely in a tired state by the last, this could turn into a real staying test, and that brings him right into the mix. In an open race, he's a live chance to finish the day at Riccarton Park on a winning note.
