A look at the field for Caulfield’s first 2YO race of the season.
Anthony and Sam Freedman could not have picked a more suitable venue for Ladhar to make her debut, which she will do in Wednesday's $200,000 Listed Debutant Stakes at Caulfield.
That is where the Exceed And Excel filly's mother Lyre achieved her signature win, in the 2019 Blue Diamond Stakes at Group 1 level.
Ladhar will become the second to race from Lyre, a daughter of Lonhro, following on from Wiser, who is also by Exceed And Excel and ran third at his only start to date.
It could be a big weekend for the family with Wiser ready to resume after a couple of jumpouts and entered for races at Pakenham on Friday night along with Wodonga and Avoca on Saturday.
Ladhar, who holds down the $5.50 third line of betting, is one of a number of well-related types in the Debutant Stakes, which is Race 4 on the Caulfield card at 3.25pm.
2025 DEBUTANT STAKES FIELD
1 – COMMIT (M Price & M Kent Jnr): It is appropriate Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have the first product of Profiteer to the track given they put the polish on the speedy chestnut, who burst onto the scene in early 2021. Commit, a $90,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, is one of 91 live foals from his first crop and he looked a polished product at his only public appearance to date, in a Caulfield Heath trial on October, when he sat off Debutant Stakes rival Senza Nome but showed a good turn of foot under light riding to edge alongside before hitting the line locked together. Commit is out of the I Am Invincible mare Lot's Wife, who is a daughter of Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner-up No Looking Back whose dam Mirror Mirror was a Magic Millions winner.
2 – SENZA NOME (A Noblet): Andrew Noblet looks to have found himself a bargain in this son of Yes Yes Yes, who cost just $18,000 out of Book 2 at Magic Millions' January Sale. A great-granddaughter of Grahame Begg's former star miler Bonanova, Senza Nome was an all-the-way winner of a 900m Ballarat jumpout last month before the more recent trial against Commit.
3 – SOUND SYSTEM (J Warren): A $50,000 Inglis weanling, the son of Exceedance was reoffered at this year's Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne, where he sold for $150,000. Traces back to a family that includes Buckaroo and Middle Earth, being a granddaughter to a half-sister of their dam Roheryn. Accelerated swiftly to win a 600m Mornington jumpout on October 1 before a soft Flemington hitout nine days later when he led for much of the trial before coasting to the line in fourth position.
4 – TORNADO VALLEY (C Maher): The first of two runners by Darley stallion Too Darn Hot, the $300,000 Magic Millions colt is out of the Fastnet Rock mare Oklahoma Girl, who is out of a three-quarter-sister to Northern Meteor. The $4.60 second favourite for Wednesday's race, Tornado Valley finished last in a straight-track jumpout at Flemington on September 25 before a more solid workout over 800m at Cranbourne on October 6 when he showed an ability to take up a position, which could be important give he's drawn the pole here.
5 – FACE THE WILD: Scratched.
6 – FREE FLYING (B,W&JD Hayes): A $750,000 Easter yearling, the daughter of Snitzel is the most expensive horse in the race and the price tag is no surprise given some of the horse who appear in her pedigree page. Her dam Ennis Hill was a G3 Chairman's Stakes winner on debut and is a sister to Golden Slipper and Blue Diamond placegetter Lake Geneva and the speedy Acrobat. She's already proven a hit in the breeding barn with her second foal, Justify filly Learning To Fly, one of the best of her generation. Finished fifth in her first jumpout, at Flemington, before winning a Caulfield Heath trial when she showed slick early speed.
7 – LADHAR (A&S Freedman): See above.
8 – RACHINI (L&T Corstens, W Larkin): Malua Racing well and truly kept their options open this week with the Zoustar filly and if she runs here it can be considered a good lead to her prospects. The $200,000 Magic Millions January yearling was also entered for Thursday's Inglis Ready2Race Sale. It appears they have elected to run at Caulfield, which is not surprising off the back of a dominant 800m Flemington jumpout win on October 3 when she won by several lengths despite her three other rivals being more aggressively ridden. Rachini headed Debutant Stakes betting at $4 at midday on Tuesday.
9 – RUDOLPHINA (C Maher): The Godolphin homebred is by that organisation's star shuttle stallion Too Darn Hot out of a mare who is a sister to one of Australia's great stallions. Rudolphina's dam Viennese is by Redoute's Choice out of Snippets' Lass, which makes her a sister to Snitzel. Rudolphina has had only one public jumpout in preparation for the debut, finishing fourth over 650m at Cranbourne on October 6 when she finished fourth, beaten around four lengths, but was never extended at any point.
10 – TORTURE (B,W&JD Hayes): It's not all that common to see horses bought out of the Karaka Sale in New Zealand bob up in these early two-year-old races in Australia, but this $250,000 purchase will become the first Aussie starter for freshman sire Sword Of State, himself a precocious type, and is in the care of arguably Victoria's best 2YO stable, which won this race last year with Miss Celine. A half-sister to Group 1 winner Ruthless Dame, Torture was fourth in a Flemington jumpout before a solid second placing behind Face The Wild, who was one of the favourites for this race before her scratching, in a Caulfield Heath trial on October 2.
