Toowoomba Picks - Friday, 26 September

We’re heading up the Range this Saturday for Weetwood Day at Clifford Park — a celebration of racing, community, and springtime spirit in Toowoomba. As the Carnival of Flowers paints the town, the track hosts its biggest day of the year with the Listed Weetwood Handicap, Toowoomba Cup, and Guineas taking centre stage.

Race 1 – Class 3 Plate
No. 10 Express Code

It's not lost on me how risky it is to tip a horse with a 59 rating straight out of a maiden into a Class 3 Plate, but I'm sticking with Express Code (10).

She was barely asked for an effort when cruising home by 2.5 lengths over 870m, and it looked like a soft trial more than a race.

The weight and lack of pressure-tested form over 1000m are genuine concerns, especially against more experienced opposition.

Still, I'm backing the Currie stable to have her ready and trusting the visual — she looked like a horse with upside.

Race 2 – Colts, Geldings and Entires BENCHMARK 78 Handicap
No. 1 Our Magnus

It's hard to knock OUR MAGNUS (1) on Weetwood Day form — he's been right there in the finish the past two years.

His first-up run over 1100m was full of merit, beaten just over a length while giving away a stack of weight.

He strips fitter now and the 3kg claim from Jace McMurray brings him right into the mix.

He's a proven performer at this track and trip and looks set to get a soft run in transit.

Race 3 – Fillies and Mares BENCHMARK 78 Handicap
No. 1 Phenom

There's a touch of class about PHENOM (1), who resumes here and joins the Annabel & Rob Archibald yard after campaigning with Waterhouse & Bott.

She's a multiple Group 3 placegetter and was last seen in the Australasian Oaks, so this is a big drop in grade.

She's proven fresh, having won her maiden over this trip, and her recent trial suggests she's ready to go.

If she brings even a glimpse of her best form, she'll be right in the finish.

Race 4 – BENCHMARK 80 Handicap
No. 2 Free Carry

There's no doubt FREE CARRY (2) is going well, and his first-up win over 1400m was full of authority.

He struck a firm deck second-up and couldn't finish off, but that run's easy to forgive.

Last start he was brave, only beaten a neck by a horse getting 5kg — and he looked the winner until the final strides.

He's won at this track and trip before, and the 3kg claim from Corey Sutherland puts him right in the mix.

Expect him to roll forward and give a sight.

Race 5 – BENCHMARK 70 Handicap
No. 12 Kinross Lane

There was plenty to like about the return of KINROSS LANE (12), who resumed with a dominant win over 1100m here.

She's now four from six and looked sharp when charging home to beat OUR MAGNUS in the Stathi Katsidis.

The rise to 1300m suits, especially with added fitness second-up.

Justin Huxtable sticks and she maps to get a lovely run.

Race 6 – Class 6 Handicap
No. 4 About To Explode

There's no denying ABOUT TO EXPLODE (4) is airborne, and if he lines up here, he'll take plenty of beating.

He's won his last two in style, including a brilliant last-to-first effort at Doomben where he exploded late to win by 1.5 lengths.

He's ready for 1300m now and looks to have scared off a few rivals, judging by the scratchings.

The outside gate isn't ideal, but with fewer runners, it may not be a major concern.

Race 7 – TOOWOOMBA CUP
No. 11 Walsh Bay

There's plenty to like about WALSH BAY (11) stepping up to 2000m after a strong win over 1800m last start.

She's in a rich vein of form, winning four of her last five, and looks ready for the challenge.

Her Gold Coast win was emphatic — she travelled sweetly and put the race away with a sharp turn of foot.

Backing up quickly is a positive sign, and the Munce stable wouldn't be pushing her out in trip unless she was thriving.

Damien Thornton knows what to expect from the wide draw and should give her every chance.

Race 8 – Listed WEETWOOD
No. 12 Give Giggles

GIVE GIGGLES (12) is flying and deserves her shot at stakes level after putting together three wins from her last four starts.

She was electric last time out at Eagle Farm, charging home to win by 2.5 lengths over her pet distance.

Tony Gollan has kept her fresh with a proven four-week spacing between runs, and she looks to be thriving under that approach.

Ben Thompson takes the ride and with just 53kg, she maps to be right in the firing line.

Race 9 – TOOWOOMBA GUINEAS QTIS 3YO Plate
No. 6 Foreign Press

TIP OF THE DAY
FOREIGN PRESS (6) is building a strong record this prep and showed her class last start with a commanding win at Doomben.

She's now three from four this campaign, and her only defeat came with genuine excuses.

That second to IMPERVIOUS was full of merit, especially given she pulled up poorly and carried a hefty 59.5kg.

She gets in much better at the weights this time and looks ready to peak.

Expect her to settle just off the speed and be strong late.
