Victorian apprentice jockey Sam Kennedy enjoyed a career-best day in the saddle with a winning treble in Hobart on Sunday.
Sam Kennedy, who is indentured in Victoria to trainer Dylan Dunn, rode a double at the previous meeting in Hobart a fortnight ago and is quickly making a mark in the Apple Isle.
"We had a goal to have 15 rides a week in Victoria, but we were struggling to get that, so we thought we'd come down here, and I'm getting on some really nice horses," Sam Kennedy said.
Kennedy set the tone for the day by taking out the opening race aboard Catch A Break ($26 into $11) for trainer Siggy Carr.
Her other two winners came for John Keys, who enjoyed his own treble on the day, with Kennedy aboard Phere The Girls ($20) in a class 1 (1200m) and Happy Clan ($3.90), who won a BM68 (2200m).
Kennedy now has five Tasmanian wins in total, two of those aboard Happy Clan.
"I'm rapt with him, he's a funny old boy," Kennedy said of Happy Clan.
"He'll try a couple of tricks along the way, but a lovely ride and a lovely horse, and he was really well prepared."
For John Keys, his winning treble, which also included Sky Land ($8.50) winning a class 2 (1100m), came at an opportune time before he begins a holiday in Queensland.
"I've got no return date," laughed Keys after the last of his three winners.
"We're just going for a bit of fun," added Keys, who is planning to take a few of his team to the Birdsville races.
Drought breakersA pair of feature race winners ended winning droughts on the eight-event program.
Island Warrior ($3.30) hadn't tasted success since her 3YO Cup victory in December 2023 when in the care of trainer John Blacker. Her drought ended in emphatic fashion, opening her account with new trainer Jessie Bazan at her third start for the stable in a class 2 (1600m).
"We've been really happy with how she came off the spell with her first couple of efforts. We and the owners are hoping she'll measure up for a bit of a trip, and she did that at a mile," Jessie Bazan said.
Consistent mare Alvarinho returned to the winner's stall for the first time since her Lady Lynette victory in January 2024, when she won in a class 6 (1390m).
The well-supported Alvarinho ($3.40-$2.60) came from midfield in a slowly run affair to hold off the late challenge of Silver Dagger ($1.45-$2.90).
"I thought she was quite tough late there with the grey horse (Silver Dagger) coming down the outside," said winning jockey, Erica Byrne Burke.
"She definitely is a good horse, and I was quite confident coming here after the run last start."
