Ladbrokes Blog: Doomben Preview – 14th February 2024

Doomben will be the venue for this week's midweek metropolitan race meeting.

The track played very fair on Saturday throughout the ten race card and the rail has been shifted slightly with it now out 5m for the entire circuit.

The track is currently rated a soft 5 and with light showers predicted, it's set to remain in the soft range.

Our Ladbrokes preview can be found below.

RACE 1 - 1:38PM: STRADBROKE SEASON ON SALE NOW QTIS 2YO MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Pumicestone Road kicked off his career with a very encouraging performance over 5 f at the Sunshine Coast ten days ago.

Approaching the turn, the son of Sooboog looked to be under pressure as the speed went on but after straightening, he picked up well to run into third and was beaten by less than a length.

He will have taken good natural improvement from the experience and the rise to 6 f looks ideal.

Mark Du Plessis will again do the steering after partnering him on debut.

RACE 2 - 2:13PM: BECOME A BRC MEMBER QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE (1100 METRES)

There was plenty of merit in the debut performance of Buck's Fizz.

The Super One filly showed good ability saluting in two trials before stepping out at Eagle Farm on Australia Day.

In the 6 f event she was taken back off a wide gate but as they slowed in front, just wanted to race a bit a keen and as a result was forced into the three wide line.

Despite having everything go against her she showed plenty of fight to work home strongly into third and will no doubt be better for the experience.

Boris Thornton goes onboard for the O'Dea / Hoysted team and with any luck in running, she should prove hard to beat.

RACE 3 - 2:48PM: SKY RACING QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE (1110 METRES)

Grand Meteor finished the runner up on debut in what could well turn out to be a pretty smart maiden field.

Given a lovely run up on speed, the daughter of Deep Field kicked strongly in the straight but just couldn't reel in the eventual winner.

With the race experience and added fitness she looks well placed here over the 5 1⁄2 f and Ryan Maloney retains the ride for leading trainer, Tony Gollan.

RACE 4 - 3:23PM: CASCADE MAIDEN PLATE (1630 METRES)

Bliss Miss has worked home strongly in both of her starts this campaign and will appreciate stepping up to the mile here.

Only lightly raced, with just the three starts, the filly was put away after her debut run back in August and has showed good improvement in two runs back.

Last start she chased home what looks to be a very smart galloper in Jungle Prince and whilst there was a three and a half length margin, she fought strongly to hold out the challengers.

She has drawn a little bit awkward in barrier eight but if she can slot in and find cover, she'll be doing her best work late.

RACE 5 - 3:58PM: GIRLS DAY OUT 2 MARCH BM65 HANDICAP (1630 METRES)

Cosmic Gossip has returned from a spell in good order, finishing a length off in both runs this campaign.

The Spill The Beans mare hit the line strongly when resuming over the 5 1⁄2 f and last time, she settled closer over 7 f and held her ground through the line behind two in-form runners.

Fitter for those appearances she looks ready to peak here out to the mile.

Lindsay Hatch has elected to go with the claim, securing Jake Molloy to do the steering.

RACE 6 - 4:33PM: 390 QTIS YEARLINGS @ MM MARCH C5 HANDICAP (1350 METRES)

Prime Asset was doing his best work late when resuming here over 6 f a fortnight ago.

He did race a bit keen in behind the leader and was then held up in the early part of the straight but finished off strongly once clear.

The Gillian Heinrich trained gelding will have taken plenty of improvement from that outing and he does boast a terrific second up record.

The step to 6 3⁄4 f looks ideal and he's drawn to get the right run for Queensland's leading rider, Jimmy Orman.

RACE 7 - 5:10PM: XXXX GOLD BM65 HANDICAP (2030 METRES)

After some solid runs in Sydney, Chris Waller elected to send Harold The Great up to his Gold Coast base and with a drop back in grade, he was able to get the job done, taking out a BM68 at Ipswich in late December.

Given a four week freshen, he then headed back to Ipswich but just had too much ground to make up after settling back at the tail.

A son of Savabeel, he's a genuine stayer and with any luck in running he'll certainly make his presence felt.

He gets a senior rider back in the saddle, with Martin Harley set to do the steering.

RACE 8 - 5:45PM: LADBROKES MATES MODE BM68 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

Fumiko has been racing well since joining the Tony Gollan yard.

The Flying Artie mare was only narrowly beaten when resuming over 5 f and she was very good again second powering home from the tail to finish fourth.

She had no luck at all at her following outing but bounced back last time with a late charge to again finish second.

She'll certainly appreciate the drop back in grade here and looks ideally placed up to 1200m.

Cejay Graham retains the mount, she'll take 1.5kgs off and the good draw can see her settle within striking distance.

1 unit – FUMIKO
