Ladbrokes Blog: Doomben Preview – 22nd November 2023

Midweek racing in Queensland this week takes us to Doomben where seven races are scheduled to be run and won.

The weather this week has been less than favourable for racing which will see a rain-affected surface on Wednesday.

We've provided our thoughts on each race below.

RACE 1 - 2:53PM: QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)

Pulpit is on debut for astute Eagle Farm trainer Barry Lockwood.

The daughter of Microphone has had one public trial leading into this first-up assignment and looked good working to the line under her own steam to finish fourth by 2.55 lengths.

Martin Harley was aboard in the trial and sticks for the race ride.

He'll need to call on his experience to counter the potentially tricky wide gate.

1 Unit – Pulpit (9)

RACE 2 - 3:28PM: Class 1 Plate (1050 METRES)

Bezique returns to racing following a 24-week break.

The Tony Gollan-trained four-year-old mare was given a quiet trial against Class 3 opponents and looked to be doing it very easily.

She won impressively on debut over this distance at the Sunshine Coast so she can fire fresh.

Last preparation she raced in three black-type races during the Queensland Winter Carnival highlighting that the stable obviously think highly of her.

Ben Thompson takes the ride and should settle on speed.

1 Unit – Bezique (7)

RACE 3 - 4:03PM: Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap (1350 METRES)

Kitema hasn't had a great deal of luck in his two runs back this preparation.

The Tony Gollan-trained four-year-old gelding got too far back when drawing barrier 12 of 13 at Ipswich first-up.

Last start he was never on the track over this course and distance, racing three deep throughout, but despite that he gave a good kick in the straight before weakening late for a 2.78 length fourth to Russian Mystic.

He'll strip fitter third-up and finally draws to get a nice run.

1 Unit – Kitema (6)

BET NOW: Doomben Race 3

RACE 4 - 4:38PM: Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap (1350 METRES)

Leitzel was luckless when debuting over this course and distance last start.

The Chris Waller-trained Trapeze Artist filly enjoyed a nice run but was held up and then given no room to move in the straight.

Her run came to an end at that point, and she finished sixth by 3.16 lengths.

She'll strip fitter second-up and gets the services of top jockey Jimmy Orman.

1 Unit – Leitzel (6)

RACE 5 - 5:13PM: BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (2240 METRES)

Skylon gave a good sight last start over 1 1⁄2 m at Eagle Farm but was ultimately run down by stablemate Kureder to finish 1.4 lengths second.

The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old gelding will appreciate dropping slightly in trip given he won over a similar distance at Ipswich two starts back.

On that occasion he settled in a handy position by sprinting quickly to hold off Kureder with a two-length margin to third.

Jimmy Orman takes the ride and will likely roll forward from the outside gate.

1 Unit – Skylon (6)

RACE 6 - 5:48PM: BENCHMARK 65 Handicap (1660 METRES)

Fleur De Monde provided another example of solid Sydney form holding up well in Brisbane when finishing second over 1 m at Eagle Farm last start.

The Chris Waller-trained mare hadn't been too far away in two starts at Rosehill and Kensington to start this preparation before coming north.

She settled handy and fought strongly with Tenzing to finish a long neck second with a big gap to third.

This race is no harder, she was scratched from a winnable race on Saturday, and she should be at peak fitness fourth-up.

Damien Thornton can use her solid early speed to roll forward and find a prominent position.

1 Unit – Fleur De Monde (9)

RACE 7 - 6:25PM: BENCHMARK 68 Handicap (1110 METRES)

Tony Gollan will have a massive say in the outcome of this race with the stable accepting with five horses.

I'm with one of them, five-year-old mare Island Magic who is resuming.

The daughter of Hinchinbrook looked good in a recent trial, getting to the line well despite racing in restricted room.

She races well fresh and won last preparation over 5 f at the Sunshine Coast when first-up.

Cejay Graham, who claims 4lbs, should be able to give her every chance from the inside barrier.

1 Unit – Island Magic (9)
