Canberra Racing Preview – Friday, 20th October 2023

They race at Canberra on a Good 4 with the Rail out 7m the Entire. The fields have held up well and most races on the card are strong betting affairs.

Race 1

REET PETITE belted home from the back to place here on debut and impressed. Has a low gate and strips fitter. The Dryden yard is flying and the mare is the one to beat. VAN DER ZEE has had two starts back from a long break and should be ready to show his best. Van Overmeire rides and strikes at 24% with the Seib yard. Stablemate DHYANI peaks and has more to give. She can run along from the rail and is sure to give a sight. RUFF (10) found Twelve Hours much too good here a month ago but covered the others running into it well. Gets a couple of gear additions and can keep improving.

Race 2

COTO DE CAZA (10) hasn't been far away in strong Maidens and raced an 11-4 favourite at Newcastle 20 days ago over 7 1⁄2 f. Is crying out for the middle distance and has a key gear switch. In good Sydney hands and Beasley is a positive jockey booking. Sits down in the weights in this grade and should take a stack of beating. BOOSHANG peaks and has been close-up here his last two. Gives every indication the 1 1⁄4 m will suit and he's capable of racing forward from the paint. JIMMY NAILS in the premier local barn and delivered his Maiden win at Moruya over the mile. Peaks now and has a handy gate. Needs to find more but is a lightly raced galloper with plenty of upside. BOBBY SOX peaks and the visors are applied the first time. Was only beaten 2L at Hawkesbury two starts back over 7 1⁄2 f and his best figure was recorded over this distance at Gosford. Keep onside.

Race 3

ROMAN MISS debuted with a nice effort at Hawkesbury and then was narrowly beaten here behind Hold at an 11-4 favourite. Draws for the run of the race and has the blinkers applied for the first time. Strips fitter and should go close. The Neasham-trained DIABLO BOLT races here instead of Kembla Grange tomorrow and two stablemates have been scratched. Has switched from the Snowden yard and owns a Warwick Farm trial win. Has shown enough and is likely to come back further improved. UP TO MISCHIEF (14) debuts and is also in a top Sydney barn. Has been well-trialled and Adkins was aboard the winning one. Keep very safe. TO HIS CREDIT (15) resumes and has switched from the Snowden barn to Nick Olive and is on a 146-day return. Draws low and has trialled well at this track. He'd be a contender if produced on song.

Race 4

Competitive. MOOSHAKA delivered the 58 first-up as expected in a nice return to form. Owen stays aboard the Olive-trained galloper and she performs well second-up. Strips fitter and has won 2/5 here. Capable of repeating the dose. LUNAR SOLAR resumed at Benalla seeking the hat-trick beaten Drops in class with a 4lbs claim helping offset some of the weight rise. Should enjoy the run of the race and go close. LIGHT PRESS resumes for a local barn and has won fresh. Brings strong relative figures from the back of the previous campaign and Ward stays with her. Draws inside and has claims. SUPER SPROCKET has switched from the Neasham yard on a 34-day return. Just missed in a CL1 at Murwillumbah two starts ago and that reads positively. Has the blinkers on the first time and the 4lbs claimer can use an inside gate. Keep safe.

Race 5

Another good contest. MISSILE SEEKER (12) won the Maiden here as expected and then came back and placed over the mile bet 11-10F. Peaks now and comes back in trip with winning rider Collett reunited. A bounce is likely. NULLIFY won the 58 at Goulburn and favourite and has raced in better company since without success. The 4lbs claim is handy and she should enjoy the run of the race. In good hands and is suited back to a sprint at this level. HIS HONOUR (11) runs along and was much too good for the Maidens here two weeks ago. Has a low gate and has some gear tweaks. Fitter again and looks capable of taking the next step. ADD MILK seeks the hat-trick off comfortable wins in the country and has a handy 4lbs claim. Can keep improving. ASTUNNER gets some weight relief and continues to race well.

Race 6

A number of chances. TULLA PARK was spelled off the 64 win at Kembla Grange over this distance and then raced favourite here first-up. Resumed here as a 9-4 favourite in this grade and was beaten 1.5L after missing the kick. The extra 1 f suits with the extra fitness and he can find the winner's circle. KELVEDON ROAD resumed with the Open win at Moruya and hasn't missed a beat. He has plenty up his sleeve with a sharp second-up record. Races well at this track/trip and is up to winning again. FANGELA missed a whisker here in the Tulla Park race improving his figures again. Draws for a soft run and keeps the handy 7lbs claim. Lifting to 6 f won't bother and he gets another chance. PROPHET'S PRIDE (10) won that contest first-up racing handy from the rail. Stays down in the weights but has a wide gate to contend with today. TEN BELLS is hard to catch but her best would see her competitive.

Race 7

SPITFIRE won the 70 here as expected and then went back to town beaten just 1L in a He lifted his figures again and finds easier company today with a 4lbs claimer aboard. Draws for the run of the race and is sure to go close. OFFSPRING was well supported here over 7 f in the 70 but sat rearward and didn't get into Impressed winning over 6 1⁄2 f prior and she's at her best over today's mile trip. Has a sticky barrier but Penza sticking is a positive and a much better effort is anticipated. CLIFF HOUSE resumed seeking the hat-trick off a CL3 win at Randwick and was never in the hunt from a wide gate. Goes second-up and needs the mile. Beasley has been with the promising galloper all along and will give him every chance. TROOPER KNUCKLE is going well and warrants respect.

Race 8

The promising Matt Dale-trained LYRICAL BEAUTY (10) resumed in terrific order easily winning a Goulburn Maiden tracking the speed. Draws for a soft on-pace run and Beasley stays aboard. Fitter and can take the next step. BREAKAWAY WEEK won the Maiden here and then missed a nose in a 58 at Queanbeyan. Fitter again and Penza takes over from the 7lbs apprentice. Back to the shorter sprint shouldn't bother. Has an awkward barrier but it's hard to risk the Dryden yard in its current form. DORAMI resumed following an easy Wagga Maiden win with a 1.5L defeat this grade at Moruya. The wide gate is against the local but she has more to give and placed her only second-up outing. DONEGAL LIGHTS resumes from a low gate for the Cave barn with Heywood a positive jockey booking. Brings strong provincial form and has won fresh. Keep very safe.
